accession code: VB.CC.36631.CEGL002586
Midwestern Ecology Working Group... 0 This silver maple - green ash - elm - cottonwood forest is found throughout the midwestern United States and parts of the eastern United States. Stands occur on medium to large, regularly flooded floodplains. The canopy cover is more-or-less closed and dominated by Acer saccharinum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Ulmus americana, and Populus deltoides. Associated species may include Ulmus rubra, Acer negundo, Salix nigra, Celtis occidentalis, and Carya cordiformis. More southward, Platanus occidentalis and Betula nigra may occur. The shrub and sapling layer is often open (<25% cover). Species that may be present include Sambucus canadensis, Rubus occidentalis, or Lindera benzoin. Woody and herbaceous vines can be prominent, including among the woody vines Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Toxicodendron radicans, and Vitis riparia. Herbaceous vine species include Apios americana, Amphicarpaea bracteata, and Echinocystis lobata. Herbaceous grasses, forbs, and ferns dominate the ground layer, including Symphyotrichum lateriflorum (= Aster lateriflorus), Boehmeria cylindrica, Erythronium americanum, Solidago gigantea, Cinna arundinacea, Leersia virginica, Elymus virginicus, Impatiens pallida, Laportea canadensis, Matteuccia struthiopteris, Onoclea sensibilis, Pilea pumila, Urtica dioica, and others. A variety of exotics may be present, including Lysimachia spp., Microstegium vimineum, Polygonum cuspidatum, Rosa multiflora, and Lonicera japonica.

accession code: VB.CC.37165.CEGL003270
Shephard, M. E. 1995. Plant comm... 0 This plant association is found primarily on peatlands occurring on distal outwash, uplifted tidal flats, and moraines in the rainforests of south-central Alaska and extending into southeastern Alaska. It is a late-seral association that appears relatively stable. Stands are dominated by Picea sitchensis or Tsuga mertensiana and regeneration is common for both conifer species. Trees are typically less than 6 m (20 feet) tall and 13-40 cm (5-16 inches) in diameter. Downed logs are uncommon. The shrub layer is dominated by Myrica gale and Vaccinium species. Common dwarf-shrubs are Empetrum nigrum and Vaccinium oxycoccos (= Oxycoccus palustris). Common forbs are Cornus canadensis and Rubus arcticus. The two most common sedges are Carex aquatilis var. dives (= Carex sitchensis) and Eriophorum angustifolium.

Cercocarpus intricatus Montane Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32031.CEGL002587
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This montane association occurs on exposed peaks, ridges and plateaus in the Colorado Plateau of western Colorado and eastern Utah and the Wasatch Range in northern Utah. Elevations range from 1850 to 2650 m (6070-8700 feet). Sites are on level to gentle slopes that may be oriented to any aspect. Plants are rooted in cracks and potholes in the limestone or sandstone bedrock. Exposed bedrock, gravel and large rock cover much of the surface area. Soil collects only in depressions and crevices of the rocky surface and is generally a poorly developed sandy loam. The vegetation is dominated by low-statured Cercocarpus intricatus with more than 10% cover. Other shrubs with lesser cover commonly associated include Amelanchier utahensis, Cercocarpus montanus, Ephedra viridis, Eriogonum corymbosum, and Symphoricarpos oreophilus. The herbaceous layer is diverse but sparse in cover and may include the graminoids Leymus salinus, Poa fendleriana, Pseudoroegneria spicata, Poa fendleriana, Achnatherum hymenoides, Koeleria macrantha, and the cushion forbs Arenaria fendleri, Petrophyton caespitosum, and Phlox spp. Scattered individuals of Pinus edulis or Juniperus osteosperma may occur in stunted, shrublike form rarely exceeding 2 m in height and not exceeding 5% cover.
