Pinus rigida / Quercus ilicifolia / Piptatherum pungens Woodland

accession code: VB.CC.21782.PINUSRIGIDAQUER
Eastern Ecology Working Group of...  0 This northernmost pitch pine - scrub oak barren community occurs on flat glacial outwash plains. Soils are typically sandy, well-drained and nutrient poor. A local history of fire is essential to the maintenance of the community. An open canopy, 30-70%, of Pinus rigida over a dense, patchy, tall-shrub layer (25-95%) of Quercus ilicifolia forms the characteristic structure of this community. In places the canopy may also contain Quercus rubra, Pinus strobus, Betula populifolia and occasionally Picea rubens or Abies balsamea. A short-shrub layer of Vaccinium angustifolium, Comptonia peregrina, Pteridium aquilinum and Gaultheria procumbens is usually present. Herbaceous species are scattered and generally more dense where the scrub oak is discontinuous. Characteristic herbs include Piptatherum pungens (= Oryzopsis pungens), Oryzopsis asperifolia, Carex lucorum, Schizachyrium scoparium, Sibbaldiopsis tridentata and Danthonia spicata. Occasional species include Vaccinium myrtilloides, Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, Comandra umbellata and Corylus sp. An interesting variant of this community containing Pinus resinosa in the canopy occurs on eskers and outwash plains in New Hampshire.

EcoArt 2002  0 This woodland alliance of California's foothills and mountains is found on ridges and upper slopes on infertile soils. Some stands are found on soils derived from ultramafic parent materials. Stands occur from 180-2000 m of elevation, and sites are usually quite xeric. The unusually large range of this alliance is indicative of its tolerance to varied environmental factors such as precipitation. In the southern reaches of the range, this alliance may receive fewer than 60 cm of rain per year; at the northern extreme perhaps as much as 150 cm per year. As with most California alliances, this alliance is adapted to a Mediterranean climate with the bulk of precipitation falling between November and May. Summers are warm and dry. ~Pinus attenuata$ is the sole or dominant tree in the canopy. Other trees present may include ~Quercus chrysolepis, Quercus wislizeni, Pinus coulteri, Pinus sabiniana, Pinus contorta, Pinus radiata$, and ~Pinus monticola$. Shrubs may be infrequent to continuous, and could include ~Arctostaphylos patula, Arctostaphylos columbiana, Quercus vacciniifolia$, and ~Lithocarpus densiflorus$.

EcoArt 2002  0 This saltbush shrubland of the American Southwest occurs in intermittently flooded habitats with saline soils. Dry lakebeds, lakeplains and old lakebeds perched above the current water table are favorable environments. The soils associated with this alliance may be carbonate-rich. This alliance is dominated by ~Atriplex spinifera$. Other species of ~Atriplex$ and other salt-tolerant shrubs may be present. These may include ~Atriplex polycarpa, Atriplex confertifolia, Atriplex canescens, Frankenia salina, Ephedra californica, Hymenoclea salsola$, and ~Distichlis spicata$. The herbaceous layer is variable. Annuals are seasonally present.

EcoArt 2002  0 Saturated bryophyte vegetation of bog hollows. Characteristic bryophytes include ~Sphagnum cuspidatum, Sphagnum rubellum (= Sphagnum capillifolium var. tenellum)$. Associated characteristic vascular species occur in low cover, including ~Utricularia cornuta, Drosera rotundifolia, Rhynchospora alba, Vaccinium oxycoccos, Chamaedaphne calyculata$.
