This Abies grandis forest occurs in the Ochoco and Blue mountains of northeastern Oregon, and is distinctive because of the lack a shrub layer. Average elevation is 1710 m (5600 feet). North aspects are typical and slope steepness is highly variable. Soils include sandy loam, fine loamy sand, silt loam, and silt over igneous parent material and a mantle of ash. Abies grandis generally dominates the tree layer with cover ranging 7-85% and averaging about 50%. Other trees include Pseudotsuga menziesii and Larix occidentalis with cover of 0-25% and 0-20%, respectively. Shrub cover is insignificant. The herbaceous layer is dominated by graminoid cover of Bromus vulgaris (15-24%) and Carex geyeri (1-6%). Cover of other herbaceous species includes Mitella stauropetala (2-7%), Galium triflorum (1-12%), and Osmorhiza berteroi (= Osmorhiza chilensis) (1-8%). Understory taxa are similar to ~Abies grandis / Acer glabrum Forest (CEGL000267)$$, except for the absence of Acer glabrum and no shrub layer to speak of. |

This aquatic vegetation, dominated by the invasive alien plant Hydrilla verticillata, is found in natural lakes and anthropogenic impoundments. Stands of this ruderal vegetation are dominated by Hydrilla verticillata often to the exclusion of all other species. Since its introduction, this plant species has rapidly spread across the southeastern United States. Its spread into anthropogenic impoundment lakes is exacerbated by the transport of propagules on boat propellers. It produces vegetative propagules known as turions, which can resist desiccation for long periods of time. |

Hypericum reductum / Aristida stricta Dwarf-shrubland » more details

This association represents very small-scale and localized depressions or swales in extremely xeric sandhills in southeastern North Carolina. Hypericum reductum dominates the shrub layer, while other scattered shrubs such as Lyonia mariana and Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa) may be present. Aristida stricta and Andropogon spp. are the dominant herbs. In this landscape, Aristida stricta is restricted to this community, apparently because of the extremely xeric conditions of the surrounding sandhill community [see Pinus palustris / Quercus laevis / Aristida purpurascens - Stipulicida setacea - (Rhynchospora megalocarpa, Selaginella acanthonota) Woodland (CEGL003590)]. |

This association occurs on upland rises in the lowest terrace of coastal flatwoods in the Florida parishes of Louisiana. Examples typically support an open canopy of Pinus palustris. Shrub and midstory layers are generally absent in high-quality, well-burned examples. The understory has a well-developed herbaceous layer dominated by grasses. Typical herbaceous species are Schizachyrium scoparium, Muhlenbergia expansa, Helianthus radula, Schizachyrium tenerum, Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa), Lobelia brevifolia, Chaptalia tomentosa, Xyris caroliniana, Carphephorus odoratissimus, Aristida purpurascens var. virgata, Pityopsis graminifolia, Solidago rugosa, Solidago odora, Symphyotrichum adnatum (= Aster adnatus), Tephrosia onobrychoides, Eryngium yuccifolium, and Aletris aurea. |
