Soils are wet to saturated and composed of sphagnum, fibrous and heath peat with woody material. The association is dominated by evergreen broad-leaved Ledum groenlandicum, which forms a tall semi-open to dense shrub layer. Spiraea douglasii is also present consistently in smaller amounts. Known existing examples have a scattered tree layer of 10-30% cover of Pinus monticola, though historically there were probably many woodlands. The moss layer generally has 20-90% cover of Sphagnum spp.
