This grassland alliance occurs in the western and southern Great Plains, Great Basin, and across the southwestern United States from Texas to California. It is reported from saline habitats in the Central Valley and in valleys and lower slopes of transmontane California from the Modoc Plateau to the Owens Valley. Elevations range from near sea level to 2100 m, but typically from 1000-1700 m. Climate is arid to semi-arid. Stands occur in a wide variety of lowland sites, such as stream terraces, swales, interdune basins, and alluvial flats. This alliance in not defined by a flood regime, but the soil often has a high water table because of land position and impermeable subsurface horizons. Soils are non-saline to moderately saline and usually alkaline. Soil surface textures are sandy to clayey. The soils morphology often includes a claypan, caliche layer or other subsurface horizon that impedes water movement. Parent material is typically alluvium derived from limestone, shale, or sandstone. ^The vegetation is characterized by a sparse to moderately dense graminoid layer of medium-tall bunch grasses with smaller densities of short grasses and forbs. Widely scattered (<10% cover) xeromorphic or halophytic shrubs and dwarf-shrubs may also be present. ~Sporobolus airoides$ is the dominant or codominant grass. Typical codominant grasses include ~Muhlenbergia porteri, Panicum obtusum$, or ~Scleropogon brevifolius$. Not included in this alliance are stands codominated by ~Achnatherum hymenoides, Bouteloua gracilis, Distichlis spicata, Pleuraphis jamesii (= Hilaria jamesii)$, or ~Hordeum jubatum$, although they may be present in small amounts. Other common grasses are ~Buchloe dactyloides, Pascopyrum smithii, Hordeum pusillum$, and ~Sporobolus cryptandrus$. Forbs and shrubs are typically sparse. Common forb associates are ~Chaetopappa ericoides$ and species of ~Sphaeralcea, Machaeranthera, Ratibida, Aster$, and ~Helianthus$. Scattered shrubs may include ~Allenrolfea occidentalis, Atriplex canescens, Chrysothamnus$ spp., and ~Sarcobatus vermiculatus$. Species of ~Salicornia$ and ~Suaeda$ occur in more saline habitats. The dwarf-shrub ~Gutierrezia sarothrae$ is common in many stands. Some stands have significant amounts of prickly pear and cholla cacti (~Opuntia$ spp.). |

This association includes upper marsh edges and flats strongly dominated by <i>Borrichia frutescens</i>, ranging in size from narrow bands to flats in excess of 500 ha. It is broadly described to include vegetation ranging from the Mid- and South Atlantic Coast to the West Gulf Coast of the United States.Other characteristic species may include <i>Spartina patens, Iva frutescens</i>, and <i>Limonium carolinianum</i>. In Texas, the composition of this low-diversity, irregularly tidally flooded shrubland is variable and can include <i>Distichlis spicata, Schoenoplectus robustus, Sporobolus virginicus, Monanthochloe littoralis, Atriplex matamorensis</i> (in south Texas), <i>Sarcocornia pacifica, Limonium carolinianum, Lycium carolinianum var. quadrifidum, Rayjacksonia phyllocephala, Prosopis reptans</i> (in south Texas), and <i>Batis maritima</i>. Here, this community often occurs just above the lower tidal flat communities ~<i>Batis maritima - Sarcocornia pacifica</i> Dwarf-shrubland (CEGL003956)$$ or ~<i>Sarcocornia pacifica - (Batis maritima, Distichlis spicata)</i> Dwarf-shrubland (CEGL002278)$$.<br /><br />This shrubland usually occurs as a very narrow band adjacent and below tidal shrublands. Two large examples of this association at Fort Pulaski, Georgia, are extensive enough to map and occur on tidal flats adjacent the extensive salt marsh communities of eastern Cockspur Island. Typically this community is monospecific, being made up almost exclusively of <i>Borrichia frutescens</i>. |

This shrubland is a zonal component of Central Basin (Tennessee) limestone cedar glades. It is also found on limestone outcrops of the Alabama Cumberland Plateau and Moulton Valley glade systems, and as a component of cedar glade complexes at Chickamauga-Chattanooga National Military Park. It also occurs on the Pennyroyal Karst Plain of Kentucky. Alabama and Kentucky occurrences are rare and of restricted distribution and limited extent. The substrate consists of broken fragments of flat-bedded sedimentary limestone, with accumulations of shallow soil. Characteristic shrubs include <i>Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana, Rhus aromatica var. aromatica, Frangula caroliniana, Forestiera ligustrina, Berchemia scandens, Hypericum frondosum, Sideroxylon lycioides</i>, and stunted individuals of <i>Acer saccharum, Quercus muehlenbergii, Quercus shumardii, Fraxinus americana</i>, and <i>Ulmus alata</i>. Alabama occurrences may contain an occasional <i>Aesculus pavia</i>. A low 'herbaceous' stratum is dominated by <i>Cheilanthes lanosa, Pleurochaete squarrosa, Thuidium delicatulum, Climacium americanum, Cladonia</i> spp., and <i>Opuntia humifusa</i>. Typically grades into open, herbaceous-dominated glades, or into woodlands or forests commonly dominated by <i>Quercus muehlenbergii, Fraxinus americana</i>, and <i>Celtis laevigata</i>. |

This glade community occurs on the Mazarn Shale and related substrates of the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma (including some mixed shale and sandstone examples). The flora has many neutral to basic substrate-preferring components. These glades may occur as extensive areas of herbaceous vegetation with intervening strips of related woodland vegetation. A few stunted individuals of Quercus stellata, Ulmus alata, Carya texana, Fraxinus americana, Pinus echinata, and Juniperus virginiana may be present. Ceanothus herbaceus, Celtis tenuifolia, Crataegus spathulata, Rhus aromatica, Sideroxylon lanuginosum, Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, and Yucca arkansana are present as low shrubs. Perennial grasses and graminoids include Schizachyrium scoparium, Danthonia spicata, Panicum virgatum, Dichanthelium commutatum, Elymus sp., and Scleria oligantha. Forbs include Asclepias hirtella, Asclepias viridiflora, Camassia scilloides, Cheilanthes lanosa, Cheilanthes tomentosa, Coreopsis tinctoria, Croton capitatus, Croton monanthogynus, Croton willdenowii, Echinacea pallida, Eriogonum longifolium var. longifolium, Gamochaeta sp., Glandularia canadensis, Hedyotis nigricans, Lechea tenuifolia, Manfreda virginica, Monarda russeliana, Opuntia humifusa var. humifusa, Pycnanthemum tenuifolium, Ruellia humilis, Salvia azurea var. grandiflora, Selaginella arenicola ssp. riddellii (= Selaginella riddellii), Silphium laciniatum, Solidago sp., Stylosanthes biflora, Tephrosia virginiana, Thelesperma filifolium, Tragia betonicifolia, and Vernonia sp. The inclusion of Symphyotrichum patens var. patentissimum (= Aster patens var. patentissimus) as a nominal indicates a relatively western (e.g., Ouachita) distribution. Lichens are in abundance, hanging from the red-cedars and forming large patches in shady areas. The presence of numerous basophilic elements and the mixed nature of the substrate distinguishes this from sandstone glades. |
