Picea pungens / Betula occidentalis Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33895.CEGL002637
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This blue spruce association is known from Colorado, southern Utah possibly northern New Mexico. It is a cool, moist riparian woodland occurring in deep, narrow canyons and alcoves in the foothills of lower montane elevations of 2200-2700 m. <i>Betula occidentalis</i> forms an open to thick band in deep, subirrigated soils along narrow floodplains, streambanks and terraces, with branches overhanging the stream. Mature <i>Picea pungens</i> dominates the canopy (10-60% cover), and <i>Populus tremuloides</i> may be present as well. <i>Betula occidentalis</i> is always present in the shrub understory (20-40% cover), often joined by <i>Alnus incana</i>. Other shrubs include <i>Salix exigua, Salix bebbiana</i>, and <i>Cornus sericea</i>. <i>Equisetum arvense</i> is always present in the sparse or dense herbaceous layer. Common associates may include forbs such as <i>Rudbeckia laciniata, Heracleum sphondylium, Fragaria virginiana, Mertensia ciliata</i>, and the graminoid <i>Calamagrostis canadensis</i>.

Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana - Pinus virginiana - Quercus stellata / Amelanchier stolonifera / Danthonia spicata - Melica mutica Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.20052.JUNIPERUSVIRGIN
Eastern Ecology Working Group of...  0 This woodland occupies areas of flat sandstone bedrock along the New River in West Virginia. It has an open to nearly closed canopy dominated by a mixture of evergreen conifer and deciduous tree species over a diverse understory of shrubs and herbs often with heavy ground cover by mosses and lichens. The open canopy is dominated by about equal amounts of Juniperus virginiana var. virginiana and Pinus virginiana. Associated deciduous tree species include Quercus stellata, Fraxinus americana, Celtis occidentalis, Ulmus americana, and Cercis canadensis. The dense shrub layer includes Amelanchier stolonifera, Rhus copallinum, Rosa carolina, d Viburnum prunifolium The exotics Ligustrum vulgare and Rosa multiflora may also be present. Vines include Toxicodendron radicans, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, and Vitis aestivalis. The invasive exotic Lonicera japonica may invade this stratum as well. The herbaceous layer has high representation of grasses; grass species include Andropogon virginicus, Danthonia spicata, Leersia virginica, Melica mutica, and Piptochaetium avenaceum. The small fern Asplenium platyneuron has been noted in examples, and may have high cover. The fern ally Selaginella rupestris may also contribute significant ground cover. Cover by mosses and lichens is variable and may approach 90%.

Equisetum fluviatile - (Eleocharis palustris) Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37077.CEGL005258
Midwestern Ecology Working Group...  0 This low graminoid marsh community is found in the hemi-boreal regions of the Great Lakes and perhaps more widely in eastern Canada. Stands occur in wave-washed shores, sandbars, and stream channels. Substrate is mineral soil (often sand), sometimes held together by root mats. The water regime is permanently flooded to intermittently exposed, and water depth is generally less than 1 m. A layer of partially decomposed stalks may be present. Emergent cover is greater than 25%, and floating-leaved and submergent cover is low. Emergent graminoids <1 m dominate the stands, including <i>Equisetum fluviatile</i> and/or <i>Eleocharis palustris (= Eleocharis smallii)</i>. Associated species of low constancy include <i>Glyceria borealis, Isoetes tenella (= Isoetes echinospora), Potamogeton gramineus</i>, and <i>Utricularia macrorhiza (= Utricularia vulgaris)</i>.

Schoenoplectus spp. - Poa palustris - Mixed Herbaceous Great Plains Streamside Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36666.CEGL005263
Midwestern Ecology Working Group...  0 Western Great Plains Streamside Vegetation lines perennial streams at lower to mid elevations in the Black Hills of the United States, and perhaps more widely in the northern Great Plains. Species composition is variable, and dominance is patchy within stands. Local dominants include <i>Agrostis stolonifera, Glyceria grandis, Poa palustris, Scirpus pallidus, Eleocharis palustris, Leersia oryzoides, Lycopus asper, Cicuta douglasii</i>, and <i>Rorippa nasturtium-aquaticum</i>. <i>Ranunculus longirostris (= Ranunculus circinatus)</i> can be abundant in adjacent shallow water. <i>Catabrosa aquatica, Mimulus guttatus</i>, and several species of <i>Veronica</i> and <i>Epilobium</i> commonly grow in adjacent shallow water. This type is undersurveyed and not well-characterized. It typically forms a narrow border, perhaps only a few m wide, along streams, and this scale may be too fine for recognition as an association.
