Quercus stellata - Quercus velutina / Schizachyrium scoparium Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36726.CEGL005281
Midwestern Ecology Working Group...  0 This post oak - black oak woodland type occurs in the glaciated central tallgrass region of the United States. Stands occur on dry narrow ridges and steep slopes of glaciated ridges, or on rolling topography that was prone to fires. The open-tree canopy is dominated by <i>Quercus stellata</i> and <i>Quercus velutina</i>, with minor associates of <i>Carya alba (= Carya tomentosa)</i> and <i>Carya ovata</i>. Saplings of <i>Sassafras albidum</i> and <i>Prunus serotina</i> may be present. The herbaceous layer probably contained a fairly diverse mix of prairie and forest flora, with prairie grasses, such as <i>Schizachyrium scoparium</i>, abundant. Few sites remain on which to describe this type, and historically, it may have been maintained by frequent fires.

Artemisia cana ssp. cana / Pascopyrum smithii Shrub Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.20584.ARTEMISIACANASS
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This association has been described from the Great Plains of central and eastern Montana, far western North Dakota, northwestern South Dakota, and northeastern Wyoming. It occupies terraces and floodplains along streams, where alluvium contains more soil water than is available in the uplands. Artemisia cana ssp. cana dominates the shrub layer, which may also include small amounts of Symphoricarpos occidentalis, Sarcobatus vermiculatus, or Chrysothamnus sp. The undergrowth typically is dense and composed mainly of graminoids, with forbs contributing little cover. Pascopyrum smithii often dominates, and in many stands several other species may codominate, especially Nassella viridula, Poa pratensis, and Bromus japonicus (or another exotic, annual brome grass). Exotic grasses (Poa pratensis, Bromus japonicus) dominate the undergrowth in many stands. Bouteloua gracilis and Carex filifolia, both more typically upland species, may contribute substantial cover. Common forbs are Taraxacum spp. (exotic), Achillea millefolium, Artemisia ludoviciana, and Vicia americana.

Fagus grandifolia / Smilax rotundifolia Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36428.CEGL006043
0 This maritime forest community is currently described from north-facing exposed bluffs and the back portions of rolling dunes on Long Island. The community is dominated by <i>Fagus grandifolia</i>. <i>Quercus velutina</i> and <i>Acer rubrum</i> can be present at low densities. Canopy trees exhibit a stunted, multi-stemmed growth form from wind and salt spray; trees are notably taller in more protected dune slacks. A shrub layer is sparse to absent. Vines and herbs such as <i>Aralia nudicaulis, Epifagus virginiana</i>, and <i>Smilax rotundifolia</i> form a sparse ground layer, and moss cover is variable. Soils are well-drained fine sands. This community occurs only in Long Island, New York.

Triglochin maritima Semipermanently Flooded Herbaceous Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.20247.TRIGLOCHINMARIT
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This semipermanently flooded alliance has been described from high-elevation intermountain parks in Colorado. Stands occur in lowland habitats such as saline marshes, salt flats, and at calcareous springs in extreme rich fens. These habitats are flooded throughout the growing season in most years. The water table may drop below the surface at the end of the growing season or during drought years, but the soils will still be saturated which permits the development of organic peat. Soils are poorly drained, deep, saline and alkaline, often derived from calcareous marls or limestone. Vegetation included in this alliance is characterized by an herbaceous layer that is dominated by the perennial rhizomatous forb Triglochin maritima. Other common species include Carex microglochin, Eleocharis quinqueflora, Puccinellia nuttalliana, Salicornia rubra, Ranunculus cymbalaria, Schoenoplectus americanus (= Scirpus americanus), and Symphyotrichum ciliatum (= Aster brachyactis). Cover and species composition is controlled largely by salinity, which is regulated by the amount of water dilution. Triglochin maritima and Salicornia rubra were more abundant in saline areas, and the salt-tolerant Distichlis spicata was restricted to the more saline sites. Generally, vegetation height, cover, and species diversity tend to vary inversely with salinity. Diagnostic of the wetland herbaceous alliance is the dominance of Triglochin maritima.
