Wind-tidally flooded floating/submergent wetlands of fresh to oligohaline, river-basin guts and large pools. This community is dominated (or codominated) by <i>Ceratophyllum demersum</i>. Other abundant species can include <i>Utricularia macrorhiza</i> and <i>Nymphaea odorata</i>. Other species include <i>Elodea nuttallii, Spirodela polyrrhiza, Wolffiella gladiata, Lemna</i> spp., and <i>Utricularia purpurea</i>. |

This scrub community of the Florida panhandle coast has an emergent layer of <i>Pinus clausa</i> above a patchy shrub layer dominated by <i>Ceratiola ericoides</i>. Bare soil is common, and herbaceous species are generally absent. Patches of <i>Cladonia</i> species form the ground layer. |

This association represents one of several freshwater tidal swamp forest types found in the Florida portion of the northern Gulf of Mexico. It is apparently dominated by <i>Taxodium distichum, Nyssa biflora</i>, and <i>Persea palustris</i>. This type is known from the Apalachicola rivermouth and may occur elsewhere in the region. More information is needed to determine the full extent of this type and its relationship to other freshwater tidal swamps of the region. |

This community occurs in southern Florida. The open canopy consists of <i>Taxodium ascendens</i>, which is often stunted. The herbaceous stratum is dominated by <i>Muhlenbergia filipes</i> and <i>Rhynchospora microcarpa</i>. Other herbaceous species include <i>Cladium mariscus ssp. jamaicense, Setaria parviflora (= Setaria geniculata), Schizachyrium</i> sp., <i>Pluchea rosea</i>, and <i>Sagittaria lancifolia</i>. |

Vertical and sloping exposures of amphibolite or other mafic rocks, at moderately high elevations in the southern Appalachian Mountains (800-1300 m in elevation), with scattered vegetation rooted in crevices and on ledges. Characteristic species include <i>Physocarpus opulifolius, Campanula divaricata, Tradescantia subaspera, Packera plattensis (= Senecio plattensis), Coreopsis major, Phlox subulata ssp. subulata, Arabis lyrata (= var. lyrata), Houstonia longifolia (= Houstonia tenuifolia), Houstonia purpurea, Polygala senega, Deschampsia caespitosa, Hydrangea arborescens, Kalmia latifolia, Corydalis sempervirens, Tsuga caroliniana, Carex misera, Woodsia ilvensis, Asplenium montanum, Schizachyrium scoparium</i>, and others. |

This early-successional forest occurs along the shores of lakes, ponds, artificial impoundments, and possibly in other topographic situations in the Gulf Coastal Plain and adjacent ecoregions of North America. The canopy is strongly dominated by <i>Salix nigra</i> but may also include <i>Liquidambar styraciflua, Acer rubrum, Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i>, and <i>Acer negundo</i> within their respective ranges. <i>Cephalanthus occidentalis</i> is often a strong dominant in the shrub layer and may be the only species present in that stratum. Other understory components may also include <i>Ampelopsis arborea, Baccharis neglecta</i>, and <i>Amorpha fruticosa</i>. |

This forest community occurs on floors of canyons of Permian sandstone in west-central Oklahoma and in canyons and north-facing slopes in the Wichita Mountains (such as Hollis Canyon). The canopy of stands is typically dominated by <i>Acer saccharum, Ulmus rubra</i>, and <i>Juglans nigra</i>. Other typical associates include <i>Chasmanthium latifolium, Elymus virginicus, Galium aparine, Parthenocissus quinquefolia, Quercus muehlenbergii, Quercus shumardii</i>, and <i>Thalictrum dasycarpum</i>. It is known from Caddo, Canadian, and Comanche counties, Oklahoma. |
