Avicennia germinans is the dominant shrub, usually from 0.5-3 m tall. Batis maritima forms a lower shrub layer, usually also extending outward from the Avicennia, and may form a small or extensive adjacent community.

This community forms landscape mosaics with Quercus havardii shrublands, wetland dune swales, and sparsely vegetated dunes.
