This herbaceous association occurs on gentle to steep often northeast or northwest slopes at low elevations between 52 and 422 m. <i>Nassella pulchra</i> is characteristically abundant in the herbaceous layer. <i>Hazardia squarrosa</i> is characteristically found in the shrub layer at low cover, and <i>Artemisia californica</i> is also usually present in this layer.
