This forest is currently only known from moderately well-drained alluvial floodplains of the Leon River and Cowhouse Creek in the Lampasas Cutplain of central Texas. It may also extend into adjacent ecoregions. The vegetation is characterized by a closed-canopy forest dominated by Ulmus crassifolia (cedar elm) and/or Carya illinoinensis (pecan). The canopy may also include Celtis laevigata var. laevigata (sugarberry), Celtis laevigata var. texana (Texan sugarberry), Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash), Quercus macrocarpa (bur oak), Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar), and Ulmus americana (American elm). In addition to canopy species, the midstory often includes Acer negundo (boxelder), Maclura pomifera (osage orange), Sideroxylon lanuginosum (gum bully), and Sapindus saponaria (wingleaf soapberry). The understory is typically open with scattered shrubs, including canopy saplings and Forestiera pubescens (stretchberry), Callicarpa americana (American beautyberry), Cornus drummondii (roughleaf dogwood), Frangula caroliniana (Carolina buckthorn), and Ilex decidua (possumhaw). Herbaceous ground cover is typically greater than 75% cover of a mixture of graminoids and forbs, including Elymus virginicus (Virginia wildrye) (which can have high cover), Carex bulbostylis, Geum canadense (white avens), Sanicula canadensis (Canadian blacksnakeroot), Ruellia drummondiana (Drummond's wild petunia), Chasmanthium latifolium (Indian woodoats), Verbesina virginica (white crownbeard), Commelina erecta (whitemouth dayflower), Vernonia baldwinii (Baldwin's ironweed), Symphyotrichum drummondii var. texanum (Drummond's aster), and Cocculus carolinus (Carolina coralbead). Vines, including Toxicodendron radicans (eastern poison ivy), Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper), Smilax rotundifolia (roundleaf greenbrier), Smilax bona-nox (saw greenbrier), and Vitis cinerea (graybark grape), are a common component of this association and are typically present in all strata. |
