This type represents very wet prairies or open savannas on the Apalachicola National Forest in northern Florida. These are possibly the wettest phase of these communities currently described. Although essentially an herbaceous community, this type often has an emergent shrub layer of Nyssa ursina and clumps of other shrubs such as Ilex glabra, Ilex myrtifolia, Morella caroliniensis, Cliftonia monophylla, and may have a spindly layer of stunted Pinus elliottii present. These sites are heavily dominated by Aristida beyrichiana but also support Ctenium aromaticum, Rhynchospora chapmanii and/or Rhynchospora corniculata, and Aristida palustris. Rhynchospora corniculata is found in the wettest sites and is either rare or absent from other wet prairies of the region which are apparently somewhat drier. Lycopodiella alopecuroides and Rhexia lutea may also be indicative. The emergent shrub layer may develop due to soil wetness which does not allow fire to penetrate the wettest portions of these savannas. |

This forest association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this forest are found at dry mesic to mesic sites at low to mid elevations (1190-1645 m [3900-5400 feet]) on the mid portion of south- to north-facing, moderate to somewhat steep (12-23°) slopes. Soils are moderately developed to rocky and tend to be moderately well-drained to well-drained with textures ranging from loam to silt loam of igneous and metamorphic, granitic parent material. Litter cover is high (80-95% cover). Disturbance is usually low. Stands form an intermittent tree layer and an intermittent to continuous shrub layer. The herb layer is sparse. This association is dominated by Quercus kelloggii and Calocedrus decurrens in the overstory and Chamaebatia foliolosa in the understory. Rarely are Abies lowiana, Pinus ponderosa, Pseudotsuga menziesii, and Quercus chrysolepis present. A variety of other species may be present contributing to minor cover including Arctostaphylos patula, Toxicodendron diversilobum, Ceanothus integerrimus, Arctostaphylos mewukka, Galium bolanderi, and Galium aparine. |

This woodland association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Elevations range from 2285 to 2650 m (7500-8700 feet), and aspects are variable. This association is found in low to high slope positions. Soils are moderately well- to well-drained loamy sands and sandy loams derived primarily from granite. Sites are upland. Pinus jeffreyi is the sole mature tree in sampled stands. Trees range from 10-50 m in height. Abies lowiana and Pinus albicaulis saplings occur infrequently in the shrub layer. Shrubs include Cercocarpus ledifolius and Artemisia tridentata. The herbaceous layer varies from 5-50% cover. Elymus elymoides is the only frequent species in the herb layer. Other herb species include Leptosiphon pachyphyllus, Poa secunda, and Wyethia mollis. |

This herbaceous association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands of this association occur on very gentle lower slopes and basin floors between 2440 and 3050 m (8000-10,000 feet) of elevation. Aspect is not important for the type as slopes seldom exceed 2%. Sites are seasonally saturated/flooded, and usually have perennial subsurface moisture. Soils are sandy to silt loams. This alpine/subalpine meadow association contains Calamagrostis breweri as the dominant grass in the herbaceous layer, with other graminoids such as Danthonia intermedia, Carex filifolia, Carex fissuricola, and Deschampsia cespitosa important species. Several other graminoids may be present at low cover values. Oreostemma alpigenum is the dominant forb, with the subshrub Vaccinium cespitosum present, but in low cover. Other forb associates may include Gentianopsis holopetala, Senecio scorzonella, Polygonum bistortoides, Ranunculus alismifolius, Sibbaldia procumbens, Ptilagrostis kingii, Muhlenbergia filiformis, Carex subnigricans, and/or Antennaria spp. |

This alliance consists of shrublands where Quercus durata is dominant or codominant in the shrub canopy. Other associated species include Adenostoma fasciculatum, Arctostaphylos glandulosa, Arctostaphylos glauca, Arctostaphylos pungens, Arctostaphylos viscida, Ceanothus jepsonii, Cercocarpus montanus, Eriodictyon californicum, Fremontodendron californicum, Garrya congdonii, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Quercus berberidifolia, Quercus wislizeni, and Umbellularia californica. Emergent Hesperocyparis macnabiana, Hesperocyparis sargentii, Juniperus californica, Pinus attenuata, or Pinus sabiniana trees may be present with sparse cover. Herbaceous layer is sparse to intermittent. Stands are restricted to areas with serpentine soils or other ultramafic substrates which are shallow and rocky, and occur between 150 and 1500 m in elevation within the Coast Ranges of California. The climate is Mediterranean with cool, wet winters and long, hot summers. Precipitation ranges from 200 cm annually in the north to 50 cm annually in the south. |
