The Populus deltoides/Sporobolus cryptandrus (plains cottonwood/sand dropseed) riparian woodland occurs on sandy soils along the Arkansas River stream banks and floodplain. The cottonwood trees are large and create an near-continuous overhead canopy. There are few native shrubs, creating an open, park-like structure. Unfortunately, Tamarix ramosissima (tamarisk) has become a thick subcanopy in many stands along the lower Arkansas River in Colorado. Known from Bijou Creek, a tributary to the South Platte River, from the Arkansas, Purgatory, and Big Sandy Rivers, and a small canyon tributary (Sand Canyon) on southeastern Colorado plains. |

This association represents open shrublands dominated by Hypericum chapmanii in northern Florida. Such areas may be found in a variety of habitats such as small flatwoods ponds and dome swamps or along the ecotones of larger ponds and domes in the region. The vegetation is typified by a moderate to dense shrub/dwarf-tree stratum 2-5 m tall, dominated by Hypericum chapmanii, typically with Ilex myrtifolia and Hypericum brachyphyllum present. A sparse emergent layer of Taxodium ascendens may be present. Other shrubs, such as Cyrilla parvifolia and/or Nyssa ursina, may also occur as codominants or significant components in some examples. Typical herbaceous species include Coreopsis nudata, Polygala cymosa, Lobelia floridana, and Pinguicula planifolia. |
