UNKNOWN 4 This association is found in narrow bands along small streams with ephemeral to intermittent flow or on rarely flooded terraces along larger, more permanent streams that are highly incised (in this situation, the association often covers larger areas). It may also be found in very narrow bands on slopes around streams (these examples are often small enough to be included in the surrounding vegetation) or along the boundary of slopes and floodplains. Canopy cover is often dense but may resemble that of a woodland along the upper reaches of small streams, especially in areas with relatively frequent fire. Canopy composition is highly variable with some upland influence but is dominated by Ulmus crassifolia (cedar elm) and sometimes codominated by Carya illinoinensis (pecan). Other canopy species may include Fraxinus pennsylvanica (green ash), Celtis laevigata (sugarberry), Ulmus americana (American elm), Juniperus virginiana (eastern redcedar), Maclura pomifera (osage orange), Acer negundo (boxelder), and Morus rubra (red mulberry). Platanus occidentalis (American sycamore) and Salix nigra (black willow) are often present in the stream bed. Upland species sometimes found in this association (especially towards the upland edge) include Quercus fusiformis (plateau oak), Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper), Fraxinus texensis (Texas ash), Quercus buckleyi (Buckley oak), and Quercus muehlenbergii (chinkapin oak). Along very small, incised streams, Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper) may become dominant, especially after fire suppression. The understory may be dense to open, depending on the fire history of the site. Common species include Ilex decidua (possumhaw), Cornus drummondii (roughleaf dogwood), Frangula caroliniana (Carolina buckthorn), Sideroxylon lanuginosum (gum bully), Symphoricarpos orbiculatus (coralberry), Viburnum rufidulum (rusty blackhaw), Smilax (greenbrier) spp., Toxicodendron radicans (eastern poison ivy), Rubus trivialis (southern dewberry), Ampelopsis arborea (peppervine), Vitis (grape) spp., and Parthenocissus quinquefolia (Virginia creeper). Herbaceous cover is variable and can include Geum canadense (white avens), Sanicula canadensis (Canadian blacksnakeroot), Galium circaezans (licorice bedstraw), Elymus virginicus (Virginia wildrye), Verbesina virginica (white crownbeard), Vernonia baldwinii (Baldwin's ironweed), Symphyotrichum drummondii (Drummond's aster), Desmodium tweedyi (Tweedy's ticktrefoil), Tragia brevispica (shortspike noseburn), Passiflora lutea (yellow passionflower), Ruellia (wild petunia) spp., Elephantopus carolinianus (Carolina elephantsfoot), Justicia americana (American water-willow), and Chasmanthium latifolium (Indian woodoats).

NatureServe Biotics 2019 4 This association represents one of two inland hammocks or oak domes with a dominant or significant canopy component of Quercus virginiana in Florida and adjacent areas. A variant occurs on older, well-developed landscapes of Cumberland Island National Seashore. This type is the more mesic of the two and is characterized by a more diverse overstory that often includes Quercus hemisphaerica and Quercus nigra (more xeric stands with a purer Quercus virginiana overstory are accommodated by ~Quercus virginiana / Vaccinium arboreum - Ilex vomitoria Forest (CEGL007028)$$). Serenoa repens is a typical, and possibly dominant, shrub-layer species. It is believed that this community develops on sites that would have been occupied by Pinus palustris given sufficiently frequent fire-return intervals.
