accession code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:35497-{FDCA9B0E-1F55-47AD-955D-601DA0210B6F}
NatureServe Biotics 2019 3 This community is an oak-hickory forest of the East Gulf Coastal Plain of Mississippi, extending into adjacent areas, including possibly Alabama and Georgia. The canopy of stands of this type documented in Mississippi are dominated by Quercus alba with a significant amount of hickory (especially Carya glabra) also present. These stands lack Quercus rubra, Quercus falcata, and Quercus stellata. Minor amounts of Quercus coccinea are present in some stands. Other overstory trees known to be present include Pinus echinata.

NatureServe Biotics 2019 3 These are linear pond pine woodlands occurring along seepage-fed transition zones in the Florida Panhandle. They are dominated by an open overstory of Pinus serotina with a little Pinus palustris. A floristically diverse herbaceous layer is typical, dominated by Sporobolus floridanus, Aristida beyrichiana, and Arundinaria tecta. Scattered shrubs are present, including Lyonia mariana and Lyonia lucida, the density of which may be greatly affected by fire history.

NatureServe Biotics 2019 3 According to Christy (2004), this association is a riparian forest. Fraxinus latifolia is typically the only tree present in these stands. Symphoricarpos albus and Rubus ursinus may cover up to half the shrub layer, and Corylus cornuta may sometimes have cover up to 40%. The herb layer is dominated by monotypic stands of Carex obnupta with few other species present. Depressions with Carex obnupta may remain flooded into the growing season.

» more details
accession code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:35431-{2FD40F5C-E755-4FD9-8A0B-014CF6DF8A16}
NatureServe Biotics 2019 3 This extremely dry association occurs on inland, xeric, coarse sand ridges in the Fall-line Sandhills region and Inner Coastal Plain of Georgia and perhaps South Carolina. Species richness is extremely low in this type with on average 18 species in 100 m2. The open canopy consists of Pinus palustris with a mix of shrub oaks in the subcanopy layer, including Quercus margarettae, Quercus laevis, and Quercus hemisphaerica. Chrysoma pauciflosculosa is the dominant dwarf-shrub and is indicative of this type, although Opuntia humifusa and Vaccinium stamineum are also constant. Other characteristic species include Aristida purpurascens, Bulbostylis ciliatifolia var. coarctata, Dichanthelium acuminatum, Selaginella sp., and Galactia sp.
