  49 This shrubland association is found in southern coastal California and occurs on gentle to steep southwest- and southeast-facing slopes at low elevations between 99 and 442 m. Parent material includes sedimentary or granite, less often gabbro, diorite, metavolcanic, or mixed granitic and metamorphic. Soil texture is more often sandy loam but varies from sand to clay or silt loam. Stands are characterized by a codominance of <i>Artemisia californica</i> and <i>Eriogonum fasciculatum</i> in the shrub layer, with occasional subdominants such as <i>Salvia apiana</i> and <i>Lotus scoparius</i>. There are a variety of native and non-native species in the herbaceous layer; more common ones include <i>Amsinckia menziesii, Bromus madritensis, Bromus diandrus, Bromus hordeaceus</i>, and <i>Avena fatua</i>. An emergent tree layer is usually absent.

  49 This shrubland association occurs on somewhat steep to very steep southwest- and southeast-facing slopes at low elevations between 0 and 681 m. It is characterized by a codominance of <i>Eriogonum fasciculatum, Salvia mellifera</i>, and <i>Malosma laurina</i> in the shrub layer. The herbaceous layer is generally insignificant and composed of scattered non-native species. The emergent tree layer includes on occasion <i>Quercus agrifolia</i> and <i>Quercus lobata</i>.
