This association of the East Gulf Coastal Plain and adjacent South Atlantic Coastal Plain is dominated by <i>Cyrilla racemiflora</i> and <i>Cliftonia monophylla</i>, along with <i>Lyonia lucida, Ilex coriacea, Clethra alnifolia, Magnolia virginiana</i>, and <i>Aronia arbutifolia</i>. Scattered <i>Pinus elliottii var. elliottii</i> or <i>Pinus serotina</i> can occur but often do not. This shrubland is a common vegetation type in saturated ecotones along creeks within <i>Pinus palustris</i> sandhills and flatwoods and often encroaches into graminoid-dominated communities if fire is excluded. |

This community is a coastal scrub community of the Panhandle of Florida and related areas, dominated by <i>Ceratiola ericoides</i>. It is a relatively late-successional vegetation type of coastal dunes which have not been disturbed by sand burial for approximately 50-100 years. More recently disturbed dunes tend to have more <i>Chrysoma pauciflosculosa</i>. Other characteristic species include <i>Conradina canescens, Quercus geminata, Quercus myrtifolia, Cladonia evansii, Pinus elliottii var. elliottii, Smilax auriculata, Cladonia prostrata, Helianthemum arenicola</i> (Florida Panhandle only), <i>Lechea sessiliflora</i>, and <i>Paronychia erecta</i> (Florida Panhandle only). Some stands of this association may have a scattered canopy of <i>Pinus elliottii var. elliottii</i>. For now, it appears that <i>Ceratiola</i> shrublands of riverine sand dunes in the Inner Coastal Plain of Georgia (and possibly South Carolina) can be accommodated in this association; further information is needed. |

The aquatic community of a small, spring-fed pond in which the water is salty from flowing through salt beds in the aquifer. These salt springs occur in central New York, and were once common around Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, and near Montezuma. Most of the springs have been exploited for the production of salt, and are very disturbed or completely destroyed. The pond is permanently flooded, but the water levels fluctuate seasonally. The bottom, and shores of an inland salt pond are very mucky.
The one example of this community that has remained least disturbed is dominated by ditch grass (Ruppia maritima), and has at least one species of small fish (probably a killifish, Fundulus spp.). Another characteristic plant is the pondweed Stuckenia pectinatus. More data on this community are needed. |
