UNKNOWN  1 This woodland occurs over shallow soils, on limestone mesatops in the Edwards Plateau of Texas. This association is dominated by Quercus fusiformis (plateau oak) and Quercus buckleyi (Buckley oak) and characterized by a mixture of other trees and shrubs, including Ulmus crassifolia (cedar elm), Fraxinus texensis (Texas ash), Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper), Quercus sinuata (bastard oak), Forestiera pubescens (stretchberry), Celtis laevigata var. reticulata (netleaf hackberry), Toxicodendron radicans (eastern poison ivy), Ilex decidua (possumhaw), Cercis canadensis var. texensis (Texas redbud), Rhus trilobata (skunkbush sumac), Sideroxylon lanuginosum (gum bully), Lonicera albiflora (western white honeysuckle), Frangula caroliniana (Carolina buckthorn), Ungnadia speciosa (Mexican buckeye), and Opuntia engelmannii (cactus apple). Shrubs are usually located only under large trees or in mottes. With increasing fire frequency, the density of Juniperus ashei (Ashe's juniper) may decline. Herbaceous cover is variable and patchy in distribution. It may be dense in areas with shallow soils but sparse to absent in areas where bedrock is exposed at the surface. Herbaceous species include Carex planostachys (cedar sedge), Nassella leucotricha (Texas tussockgrass), Limnodea arkansana (Ozark grass), Chaerophyllum tainturieri (hairyfruit chervil), Gaillardia pulchella (firewheel), Erodium texanum (Texas stork's bill), and Thelesperma filifolium (stiff greenthread).
