» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37148.CEGL007356
 38 This association covers Piedmont bottomland forests which occur in broad, flat floodplains of Triassic basins of North Carolina and possibly South Carolina. The diverse canopy is characteristic, composed of species which often are normally sorted out along a hydrologic gradient in the larger floodplains of the Coastal Plain. The canopy is dominated by Quercus pagoda, Quercus phellos, Quercus michauxii, Liquidambar styraciflua, Liriodendron tulipifera, Celtis laevigata, and Ulmus americana, with lesser amounts of Quercus shumardii, Quercus palustris, Acer barbatum, Carya ovalis, Carya cordiformis, and Pinus taeda. In addition, Quercus lyrata is present in abandoned sloughs and oxbows, which are inclusions in this association. Subcanopy trees are Ilex decidua, Carpinus caroliniana, Aesculus sylvatica, Asimina triloba, and Acer barbatum. Shrubs and woody vines are Lindera benzoin, Bignonia capreolata, Toxicodendron radicans, Smilax rotundifolia, and others. The herb stratum includes Chasmanthium latifolium, Carex spp., Arisaema triphyllum, Cardamine concatenata, Claytonia virginica, Geranium maculatum, Erythronium americanum, Lysimachia ciliata, and others.

NatureServe Biotics 2019 38 This saturated longleaf pine - loblolly pine - pond pine woodland occupies wet-mesic savannas on loamy soils in the middle Coastal Plain of southeastern North Carolina. It is now almost extinct owing to conversion to agriculture, drainage, and fire suppression. The pine-dominated open canopy of stands includes Pinus palustris, Pinus taeda, and Pinus serotina. The subcanopy contains Quercus marilandica and Quercus pumila. Aristida stricta is a characteristic or dominant component of the herbaceous stratum.

accession code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:33390-{BF89A5E1-4661-4DD2-821E-EBFE2D80DFA6}
NatureServe Biotics 2019 38 This association includes forests dominated by the nominal species on slightly elevated ridges of floodplains primarily in the Atlantic Coastal Plain and the adjacent East Gulf Coastal Plain. The canopy of this successional forest is typically dominated by some combination of Pinus taeda, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Nyssa biflora. A mixture of other bottomland hardwood species may be present which includes Diospyros virginiana, Quercus nigra, Acer rubrum, Quercus michauxii, Quercus laurifolia, Ulmus alata, Carya cordiformis, Ulmus americana, Quercus pagoda, Celtis laevigata, Quercus phellos, Fagus grandifolia, Carya tomentosa, and others. Asimina triloba may be prominent in the understory with Ilex decidua, Carpinus caroliniana, Crataegus viridis, Crataegus spathulata, Ilex opaca, and other species. These forests develop following disturbance and may persist.

Acer rubrum - Nyssa biflora - (Liquidambar styraciflua, Fraxinus sp.) Maritime Swamp Forest
» more details
accession code: urn:lsid:vegbank.org:commConcept:32928-{D5A9ECFA-E6A7-4588-B186-082A0C91FDE2}
NatureServe Biotics 2019 38 These are forested basin swamps of dune swales on barrier islands of North Carolina, Georgia, and possibly other mid-Atlantic coastal states. Stands are dominated by Acer rubrum, Nyssa biflora, or sometimes Liquidambar styraciflua or Fraxinus sp. Lower vegetational strata are variable but generally fairly low in diversity, consisting of characteristic wetland species tolerant of sheltered maritime conditions and long hydroperiods.
