This plant association of Colorado and eastern Nevada is a lush, deciduous riparian woodland with a canopy of aspen and sometimes conifer or cottonwood trees. The understory has a high structural diversity of mesic shrubs and an herbaceous undergrowth ranging from a thick carpet of grasses and forbs to a very sparse ground cover in heavily shaded areas. The streamside location and the presence of obligate riparian shrub species, such as <i>Betula occidentalis, Salix exigua</i>, and <i>Cornus sericea</i>, distinguish this association from upland <i>Populus tremuloides</i> communities. |

This community exists as a savanna with scattered <i>Juniperus occidentalis</i>. Stands are found in east-central Oregon at elevations of 915-1510 m (3000-4950 feet) and may also occur in California. Sites occur on all aspects with slopes typically less than 30%, often at or near ridge-tops. Soils are coarse sandy loams to loams with a stony character, usually derived from pumice or basalt. The vegetation is dominated by <i>Juniperus occidentalis</i> trees with 3-40% cover. A shrub layer of 6-20% <i>Purshia tridentata</i> cover is present. The graminoid layer is composed of <i>Festuca idahoensis</i> and <i>Pseudoroegneria spicata</i> with <1-35%, and <1-25% canopy cover, respectively. |

Pseudotsuga menziesii / Piptatherum micranthum Woodland occurs in the Missouri River Breaks south of the Little Rocky Mountains in Phillips County, north-central Montana. Pseudotsuga menziesii is the climax tree species, and Pinus ponderosa is common in seral stands. Juniperus scopulorum and Symphoricarpos occidentalis are common in the understory. Piptatherum micranthum (= Oryzopsis micrantha) and species of moss are common in the ground layer. This vegetation is found only on cool, moist slopes. Soils are presumably derived from shales and sandstones. |

This association is found on fine sandy to loamy soils without a clay layer near the surface, such as on the Lakeland series (Typic Quartzipsamment). Pinus palustris dominates the open canopy. Scrub oaks are a mixture of Quercus laevis, Quercus incana, and Quercus margarettiae. Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa) and Vaccinium tenellum are the primary shrubs. The herb layer is dominated by Aristida stricta and is lower in diversity than that of other, more mesic, associated longleaf communities. Other typical species include Andropogon ternarius, Schizachyrium scoparium, Carphephorus bellidifolius, Cirsium repandum, Pityopsis graminifolia var. latifolia, Euphorbia ipecacuanhae, Polygonella polygama, Solidago odora var. odora, and Sassafras albidum. |

Rich pine forest with a mixed upper canopy of <i>Pinus cubensis</i> and many evergreen trees, on deep, rather humid and fertile ferritic soils, in the high plateau of Moa (eastern Cuba). A second canopy layer composed of small trees, such as <i>Bactris cubensis</i> and <i>Cyathea parvula (= Alsophila aquilina)</i>, is always present. Other characteristic species include <i>Shafera platyphylla, Gomidesia lindeniana, Vaccinium alainii, Cordia toaensis, Lyonia glandulosa, Ficus wrightii, Ossaea navasensis, Ossaea pseudopinetorum, Gundlachia cubana, Clethra cubensis, Spirotecoma apiculata, Miconia cerasiflora</i>, etc. DISTRIBUTION: East Cuba: Sierra del Maguey (Cupeyal del Norte). |
