Populus angustifolia / Crataegus rivularis Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33023.CEGL002644
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This riparian woodland association is found on the lower slopes (2400-2500 m elevation) of the San Juan Mountains and along wide, sinuous tributaries of the San Miguel and Yampa rivers in western Colorado. Stands occur away from the main channel along dry back channels or ephemeral streams in sandy clay soils. This open to moderately dense deciduous woodland is characterized by mature <i>Populus angustifolia</i> trees (10-57% cover) in the overstory and dense stands of <i>Crataegus rivularis</i> (10-70% cover) in the understory. Tree canopy often includes other species, such as <i>Pinus ponderosa, Quercus gambelii</i>, and <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>. The shrub canopy is usually diverse, with no single species codominant in all stands. Common shrubs include <i>Rosa woodsii, Cornus sericea, Symphoricarpos rotundifolius</i>, and several <i>Salix</i> species, including <i>Salix bebbiana, Salix ligulifolia (= Salix eriocephala var. ligulifolia)</i>, and <i>Salix monticola</i>. Forb and graminoid cover is minimal due to dry soil conditions.

Ivesia cryptocaulis Alpine Sparse Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34123.CEGL002735
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This association is restricted to the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area in southern Nevada. Occurrences are limited to gently to moderately sloping limestone ridges and summits above 3450 m (11,319 feet) elevation on most aspects except north. Soils are extremely gravelly and derived primarily from limestone. This pseudoalpine herbaceous community is relatively sparse (average total cover of 10%). There is no woody layer; shrub and tree species (average cover 3%) are dwarfed, typically less than 0.5 m high. The herbaceous layer typically has 7% cover and is characterized by <i>Ivesia cryptocaulis</i>, occurring with other cespitose perennial forbs and bunchgrasses. Commonly associated species include <i>Elymus elymoides, Lesquerella hitchcockii, Oxytropis oreophila, Sphaeromeria compacta, Erigeron clokeyi, Aquilegia scopulorum, Festuca brachyphylla ssp. coloradensis (= Festuca ovina var. brevifolia), Poa secunda</i>, and <i>Astragalus lentiginosus var. kernensis</i>.

Fagus grandifolia - Magnolia grandiflora - Quercus alba / Carpinus caroliniana - Ostrya virginiana - Ilex opaca var. opaca Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.18890.FAGUSGRANDIFOLI
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This West Gulf Coastal Plain beech-magnolia forest displays a well-developed three-layered structure; a closed upper canopy of Fagus grandifolia with occasional representatives of Magnolia grandiflora, Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus nigra, and Quercus alba. Midstory trees are prevalent, with Carpinus caroliniana ssp. caroliniana and Ostrya virginiana being most important, although Ilex opaca var. opaca, Cornus florida, and Nyssa sylvatica are also common components. The relatively sparse shrub stratum is dominated by Ilex vomitoria, Callicarpa americana, Hamamelis virginiana, Frangula caroliniana, Styrax americanus, and Vaccinium elliottii. The woody vine Vitis rotundifolia can be abundant. An herbaceous stratum of species typical of mesic, acid, hardwood forests of the region is sparsely present amid dense hardwood leaf litter.

Populus deltoides / Carex pellita Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32860.CEGL002649
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This woodland plant association occurs sporadically on clayey soils along broad, braided channels in low-lying swales and overflow channels in the lower South Platte River of northeastern Colorado (Central Shortgrass Prairie, Ecoregion 27). It also occurs in Wyoming, and is likely to be found in Nebraska and Kansas. Mature <i>Populus deltoides</i> dominates the canopy (50-80% canopy cover), while <i>Carex pellita (= Carex lanuginosa)</i> forms a dense ground cover. Tree canopy may also include <i>Salix amygdaloides</i> (31-61% cover). There is no consistent shrub canopy, though <i>Prunus virginiana, Celtis laevigata</i>, and <i>Parthenocissus quinquefolia</i> may be present. Other herbs include <i>Elymus lanceolatus, Bromus inermis, Muhlenbergia asperifolia</i>, and <i>Phalaris arundinacea</i>. This is a late-seral community, requiring first scouring floods for <i>Populus deltoides</i> establishment, then cessation of scouring floods for <i>Carex pellita</i> establishment.
