Abies grandis / Linnaea borealis Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.25518.ABIESGRANDISLIN
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This forest association is present throughout northeastern Oregon and west-central Idaho and is a minor type in northern Idaho and Montana. The association occupies lower to mid elevations of gentle slopes and benches of various aspects, which are protected from extreme sun and wind. Soils are slightly acidic with only a trace of bare soil and rock. Litter depths can be up to 9 cm (3.54 inches). Mid- to late-seral occurrences are dominated by Abies grandis, with Pinus ponderosa, Larix occidentalis, and Pseudotsuga menziesii being important, or even dominant, seral species in younger stands. Remnant large-diameter stems of these species are often present in the late-successional stands. The low-shrub layer is dominated by Linnaea borealis which often forms extensive mats. Medium-tall shrubs, such as Vaccinium membranaceum, are typically present. Other common shrubs are Rosa gymnocarpa, Lonicera utahensis, and Chimaphila umbellata. In the herbaceous layer, Carex geyeri, Carex concinna, and Carex rossii are all commonly present. The most frequent indicator forbs include Osmorhiza berteroi (= Osmorhiza chilensis), Galium triflorum, Prosartes trachycarpa (= Disporum trachycarpum), and Goodyera oblongifolia.

Podostemum ceratophyllum Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35533.CEGL004331
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This association represents essentially monospecific beds of <i>Podostemum ceratophyllum</i>, although some algae may also be present. This submersed vegetation forms a low mat or crust attached to rocks in moderately fast- to fast-flowing water. Typical habitat for this association in the Central Appalachians and related areas includes rocky surfaces of streambeds and riverbeds in mature drainage systems where the streams have cut down to rock and the floodplain is relatively narrow, or on dams. It tends to be associated with higher pH streams which cut through diabase, limestone or calcareous shales.

accession code: VB.CC.1358.A1603 NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTED
EcoArt 2002  0 Vegetation in this alliance occurs on rocky, talus slopes in the alpine tundra in the Colorado Front Range. Strong westerly winds are common in the winter. Stands occur between 3460 and 3650 m elevation on all aspects of gentle to moderate-gradient, stable scree slopes. Small- to large-sized boulders that are snow covered in winter provide protection from the wind and an increased moisture supply to the vegetation. Crevices between the rocks create mesic microsites suitable for plant growth. Stands also occur among the krummholz, where the stunted trees may provide similar sheltered sites. Soils are young and poorly developed. ~Aquilegia caerulea var. caerulea$ and ~Cirsium scopulorum$ are the dominant species. The fern ~Cryptogramma acrostichoides$ and the forbs ~Senecio fremontii var. blitoides$ and ~Viola biflora$ are the most common associates. ~Aquilegia saximontana$ and ~Oxyria digyna$ are often present. The cryptogam cover is sparse; ~Hypnum revolutum$ is the most common moss species, and ~Cladonia pyxidata$ is the most common lichen present.
