This California woodland alliance of valley bottoms and gentle slopes requires intermittently flooded, seasonally saturated soils. The soils are deep and alluvial or residual, and the water must be fresh. Elevations range from sea level to 775 m. The climate regime throughout the range of this alliance is strongly Mediterranean, with cool, moist winters and warm, dry summers. Most precipitation falls as rain between November and April. Yearly rainfall totals average approximately 60 cm. Stands of this woodland are dominated by ~Quercus lobata$. Other trees in the canopy may include ~Quercus kelloggii, Quercus douglasii, Quercus agrifolia, Platanus racemosa$, and ~Fraxinus latifolia$. Occasional shrubs may include ~Frangula californica ssp. californica$, and ~Toxicodendron diversilobum$. Lianas, such as ~Vitis californica$, are common. Annual grasses dominate the ground layer. |

Woodlands in this alliance are dominated by Salix gooddingii, often with Fraxinus velutina, and occur in mesic canyons and along floodplains in the Trans-Pecos of western Texas, southern New Mexico, southern Arizona and into Mexico. Composition varies with soil moisture and flooding regime. Populus fremontii is generally uncommon or absent. Among the canopy species that may be present are Sapindus saponaria var. drummondii, Juglans microcarpa, Celtis laevigata var. reticulata, Ungnadia speciosa, Prosopis glandulosa, and Quercus pungens. Woodlands in this alliance occur as isolated pockets in mesic desert canyons and along rocky floodplains of small, intermittent streams and is often associated with seeps and springs. |

This plant association occurs on wide floodplains on the Western Slope and Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains at elevations of 2490-2800 m (8170-9200 feet). Sites occur in areas that are flat or hummocky and typically within 0.5 m (2 feet) of the channel high-water mark. Stream channels where this association occurs are typically narrow and highly sinuous. The willow canopy is nearly a homogeneous mix of <i>Salix geyeriana</i> and <i>Salix monticola</i>. Other shrubs that may be present include <i>Salix planifolia, Salix drummondiana, Lonicera involucrata</i>, and <i>Ribes inerme</i>. The herbaceous layer can be patchy but generally is dominated by <i>Calamagrostis canadensis</i>. Other herbaceous species that may be present include <i>Carex aquatilis, Geum macrophyllum</i>, and <i>Heracleum maximum</i>. |

This shrubland is found on the western slope of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, adjacent northeastern Utah and the Great Salt Lake Desert. Elevation ranges from approximately 1300-2454 m (4260-8545 feet). Stands occur on level desert plains, toeslopes, alluvial terraces and steep slopes at the base of mesas. Soils are well-drained, somewhat alkaline and include sandy clay loam. The vegetation is characterized by an open (10 to 25% cover) short-shrub layer that is dominated by <i>Atriplex canescens</i>, with an herbaceous layer dominated by the bunchgrass <i>Achnatherum hymenoides</i>. Associated shrubby species provide sparse cover and may include <i>Rhus trilobata</i> and <i>Krascheninnikovia lanata</i>. The herbaceous layer is low in species diversity and provides sparse to low cover, except in disturbed stands, where <i>Bromus tectorum</i> is present to codominant in the understory. |
