Leiophyllum buxifolium Dwarf-shrubland Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.21547.LEIOPHYLLUMBUXI
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 Associations in this alliance occur as fairly sparse to essentially continuous mats in thin soils around high-elevation rock outcrops in the Southern Blue Ridge (largest occurrences to 1-2 hectares). This shrubland has a matted krummholz structure and occurs in northern parts of North Carolina. Dense Leiophyllum occurs also in New Jersey and North Carolina Coastal Plain, but probably only as part of woodland communities.

Atriplex obovata Badland Sparse Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34295.CEGL002928
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This sparsely vegetated badland association occurs in the southern Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona between the elevations of 1300 and 1741 m (4265-5712 feet). Sites are flat to gently sloping and range between 0 and 9% (average 3%). Substrates are clays derived from shale. Many of the stands have some cover of surface rocks, including sandstone, basalt, desert pavement, and petrified wood. The vegetation cover is characterized by sparse total vegetation cover (<10%) of scattered low shrubs dominated by <i>Atriplex obovata</i>. Locally, shrub cover may range up to about 15% cover, but in general, shrub cover is <5% with scattered grasses and forbs (<5% cover). Additionally, total cover may temporarily exceed 10% following rain events due to blooms of annuals. In some stands, cover of <i>Sporobolus airoides</i> or <i>Pleuraphis jamesii</i> ranges between 0 and 4% and may actually have slightly higher cover than <i>Atriplex obovata</i>, although total cover is low. The exotic annual forb <i>Salsola tragus</i> is often present in sampled stands.

Carex utriculata Perched Wetland Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33959.CEGL002922
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This herbaceous association is currently only known from Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This association is found on a gentle west-facing slope at 2985 m elevation. This substantial wetland site occurs on a broad, relatively flat extent of Willow Creek, and is permanently flooded with very poorly drained muck soils. Water covers 55% of the ground surface with 35% cover of litter and duff. The surveyed stand encompasses a large wet area that is homogeneous in cover. It is essentially a monoculture of <i>Carex utriculata</i> with 80% cover. Trace amounts of <i>Calamagrostis canadensis</i> are present, along with scattered individuals of <i>Dasiphora fruticosa ssp. floribunda (= Dasiphora floribunda)</i> and <i>Salix planifolia</i>.

Pseudotsuga menziesii / Arnica cordifolia Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.18700.PSEUDOTSUGAMENZ
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This forest association occurs in the central and northern Rocky Mountains from the lower to mid montane zone. Elevations range from 1430 to 2900 m (4690-9500 feet). Sites are variable but generally on dry aspects. Substrates are variable and may be very gravelly or not, with soil textures ranging from sandy loam to silt. Ground surface has high cover of litter, often 4-7 cm deep, relatively low cover of surface rock (<10%), and low cover of bare soil. The vegetation is characterized by a relatively dense (60-90% cover), evergreen needle-leaved tree canopy strongly dominated by Pseudotsuga menziesii with Arnica cordifolia or Astragalus miser dominating or codominating the sparse to moderately dense understory. Other mature seral tree species present include Pinus contorta, Pinus flexilis, or Juniperus scopulorum. The dense canopy limits understory development so only scattered shrubs may be present, not enough to form a shrub layer. The herbaceous layer, whether depauperate or moderately dense, dominates the forest floor and is dominated or codominated by Arnica cordifolia and Astragalus miser.

Fraxinus latifolia / Spiraea douglasii Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33452.CEGL003392
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 According to Christy (2004), the habitat of this association is riparian woodland or forest with an open to closed canopy. <i>Fraxinus latifolia</i> is the only tree species present, and stands are characterized by a very dense shrub layer of <i>Spiraea douglasii</i> with little else present except <i>Carex obnupta</i>. Stands may be extensive along floodplains, and some have no doubt developed on abandoned pasture land and old prairie.
