Cardamine cordifolia - Mertensia ciliata Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.25938.CARDAMINECORDIF
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 The generally small stands of this plant association are found in and near running water of small streams, seeps, and springs. Associated taxa may vary greatly with this plant association, but the dominance of Cardamine cordifolia, Mertensia ciliata or Senecio triangularis is clear. All of these species may be present or only one of the three.

Carex spectabilis - Sibbaldia procumbens Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34101.CEGL003140
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This herbaceous association is currently only known from Yosemite National Park in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. This alpine herbaceous vegetation grows at about 3200 m (10,500 feet) of elevation on moderate to steep slopes near seeps. Aspects are generally south, and substrates are seasonally saturated silt loams derived from granitic or metamorphic parent materials. This is a well-drained community that occurs on stony and/or bouldery slopes often in small patches at the base of outcrops. This alpine grassland is heavily dominated by <i>Carex spectabilis</i>. No other graminoid or forb species achieves more than 1% cover, though 55 species have been recorded on plots of this type. Graminoids with high constancy include <i>Poa secunda, Calamagrostis breweri, Trisetum spicatum</i>, and various <i>Poa, Juncus</i>, and <i>Elymus</i> species. The forb <i>Sibbaldia procumbens</i> is diagnostic but attains only 0.3% cover and 70% constancy. Similar cover and constancy values are attained by the forbs <i>Penstemon heterodoxus, Polygonum bistortoides, Rumex paucifolius</i>, and <i>Potentilla</i> spp.

Festuca idahoensis - Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.18342.FESTUCAIDAHOENS
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This grassland association is described from rain shadow-affected areas near and above treeline in the northeastern Olympic Mountains, Washington. Elevation ranges from 1570-1690 m. Sites are typically on mesic, moderate slopes (20-25 degrees) with relatively warm south to west exposures. Soils are acidic, relatively deep, poorly developed sandy loams. This association is a moderately dense (73%cover) mixed graminoid/forb herbaceous layer less than 0.5 m tall that is codominated by Festuca idahoensis with Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis. Other common species include Arenaria capillaris, Campanula rotundifolia, Polygonum bistortoides, and Lupinus arcticus ssp. subalpinus (= Lupinus latifolius var. subalpinus). Occasional trees may be scattered in these stands, such as individuals of Abies lasiocarpa. Stands are separated from other high-elevation Festuca idahoensis stands by the codominance of Phlox diffusa ssp. longistylis.

A.730
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.2363.A730 NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTED
EcoArt 2002  0 This alliance consists of exotic-dominated shrublands of southern Florida and other tropical and subtropical areas. The South American-native plant ~Schinus terebinthifolius$ is dominant or codominant. Some manifestations of this community reach heights over 5 m and could be considered as 'forest,' but are placed here; they maintain a multi-trunked, tangled aspect, and a separate forest alliance would be of little utility. On southern Florida's abandoned farmland, ~Schinus terebinthifolius$ often codominates with various woody species, including the exotics ~Psidium guajava$ and ~Cestrum diurnum$, and natives including ~Ilex cassine, Persea palustris, Ficus aurea, Salix caroliniana$, and ~Baccharis halimifolia$.

Pseudoroegneria spicata - Carex filifolia Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.21558.PSEUDOROEGNERIA
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 Stands of this association occur on level or gently sloping upland sites with loam or silt loam soils. This is an herbaceous vegetation type in which graminoids contribute most of the cover. A number of forbs may be present, but forbs and shrubs contribute little cover to the vegetation. Pseudoroegneria spicata dominates the vegetation, and Carex filifolia contributes substantial cover. Small amounts of Bouteloua gracilis may be present.

Artemisia arbuscula ssp. arbuscula / Festuca idahoensis Shrub Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.25948.ARTEMISIAARBUSC
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This dwarf sagebrush shrub herbaceous association occurs from 1525 to 2800 m (5000-9100 feet) elevation. It occurs on dry, exposed moderate slopes, on undulating to rolling topography, lower mountain toeslopes, inaccessible ridges, and on very steep canyon talus slopes. Soils are shallow or moderately deep, from well- to moderately well-developed. Artemisia arbuscula is the characteristic and predominant low shrub, although it can be obscured by the grass cover. Cover of the low shrub is scattered and open (8-30%). Festuca idahoensis is the dominant understory grass (3-36% cover), with Pseudoroegneria spicata usually present, but can often be absent (0-25%). Koeleria macrantha (= Koeleria cristata), Poa secunda (= Poa sandbergii), Achnatherum thurberianum (= Stipa thurberiana), and Elymus elymoides (= Sitanion hystrix) are typical co-occurring grasses. Common forbs include Phlox hoodii, Phlox longifolia, Antennaria rosea, Crepis acuminata, Senecio integerrimus, Balsamorhiza ssp., Eriogonum spp., and Erigeron compositus.
