This herbaceous alliance of the Mojave and Colorado deserts occurs on flat ridges, lower slopes, and stabilized sand dunes. It intergrades with stands of ~Larrea tridentata$ and/or ~Yucca brevifolia$, and occurs at elevations ranging from 75-1400 m. Yearly precipitation totals are between 0 and 25 cm. There is much year-to-year variation in precipitation. The summers are extremely hot. Winter temperatures, particularly at higher elevations, can get quite cold. ~Pleuraphis rigida (= Hilaria rigida)$ is the sole or dominant graminoid in the herbaceous layer. Other grasses may include ~Bouteloua eriopoda, Dasyochloa pulchella (= Erioneuron pulchellum), Bromus madritensis, Pleuraphis jamesii (= Hilaria jamesii), Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides)$, and others. Emergent shrubs may be present at a low percentage of cover, and scattered ~Larrea tridentata$ and/or ~Yucca brevifolia$ may be present. |

These maritime forests occur on dry soils of barrier islands and similar environments on the coast of Georgia. The canopy is chiefly dominated by <i>Carya glabra</i>, but may also contain <i>Quercus hemisphaerica, Quercus austrina, Quercus geminata, Magnolia grandiflora, Pinus taeda</i>, and <i>Pinus elliottii</i>. <i>Serenoa repens</i> is often the most important shrub species, becoming dense in parts of the community. Other shrubs and woody vines include <i>Sabal palmetto, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Ilex vomitoria, Vaccinium arboreum, Persea borbonia</i>, and <i>Vitis rotundifolia</i>. Dominant herbaceous species include <i>Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Chasmanthium laxum, Piptochaetium avenaceum, Scleria triglomerata</i>, and <i>Dichanthelium</i> spp. The epiphytes <i>Tillandsia usneoides</i> and <i>Pleopeltis polypodioides</i> may be present. Prior to the spread of laurel wilt, a disease caused by the non-native redbay ambrosia beetle (<i>Xyleborus glabratus</i>), <i>Persea borbonia</i> would have been an important component in some examples of this community. |

These planted forests are dominated by the European <i>Larix decidua</i> or the native <i>Larix laricina</i>, often in monoculture. They typically occur in small patches, often on abandoned agricultural or cleared lands. Understory species vary with geography and site history. In Vermont, for example, the indigenous northern hardwoods <i>Acer saccharum</i> and <i>Fraxinus americana</i> form an understory. Shrub and ground layers are poorly developed. |

Stands of this association (which is restricted to southern tropical and subtropical Florida) exhibit a stunted, scattered canopy (1.7-6 m tall) of <i>Taxodium ascendens</i> (varying locally to less than 10% cover), with a graminoid herb layer dominated by <i>Paspalum monostachyum, Rhynchospora microcarpa</i>, and <i>Cladium mariscus ssp. jamaicense</i>. Other characteristic species include <i>Rhynchospora divergens, Schizachyrium rhizomatum, Rhynchospora tracyi, Panicum tenerum, Cassytha filiformis, Cirsium horridulum, Solidago stricta, Rhynchospora colorata, Panicum virgatum, Aristida purpurascens var. virgata (= Aristida virgata), Ludwigia simpsonii, Symphyotrichum dumosum (= Aster dumosus), Symphyotrichum tenuifolium (= Aster tenuifolius), Sabatia bartramii, Centella erecta, Agalinis linifolia, Oxypolis filiformis</i>, and <i>Hymenocallis palmeri</i>. |

This alliance includes a variety of natural and disturbance-related forests dominated by ~Liquidambar styraciflua$ and other hardwoods, including ~Quercus$ spp. and ~Carya$ spp. Included are upland forests dominated by ~Liquidambar styraciflua$ that follow logging, agricultural cropping, or natural disturbance in uplands of the Coastal Plain, Piedmont, and other ecoregions. Some associations may have ~Quercus$ spp. and ~Carya$ spp., especially ~Quercus alba, Quercus falcata, Quercus nigra, Quercus phellos, Quercus velutina$, and ~Carya alba$. In addition, ~Pinus taeda$ may be present. Piedmont cove forests (of Alabama and likely other states) codominated by ~Liquidambar styraciflua$ and ~Liriodendron tulipifera$ are included within this alliance as well (although no association specifically accommodates them). These forests have ~Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus nigra$, and ~Acer rubrum var. rubrum$ as associated canopy species, with ~Vitis rotundifolia, Toxicodendron radicans$, and ~Smilax rotundifolia$ commonly present. |

This broadly defined type represents prairie-related, seasonally flooded herbaceous vegetation dominated by Panicum virgatum in the upper south (e.g., Kentucky, Tennessee). This type is placed here to represent vegetation which may be virtually extinct, persisting as remnant populations of Panicum virgatum in ditches and swales. This type may be redefined or subdivided if more information becomes available. |
