This is an open-canopy forest found near the southern terminus of the Ridge and Valley in Alabama. Stands are dominated by Quercus prinus with a significant component of Pinus palustris present. Stands are found on north- and northwest-facing slopes adjacent to dry or xeric ridgetops dominated by more pure stands of longleaf pine. This appears to be a naturally occurring mixed composition forest found in somewhat fire-sheltered areas. |

This lowland white-cedar - tamarack swamp forest is found in the central and upper midwestern United States and Canada (Great Lakes region). Stands occur where water seeps from the ground. The water is moderately to highly mineralized with circumneutral pH. Soils are usually organic but may be mineral. The canopy is heavily dominated by Thuja occidentalis, sometimes to the exclusion of other trees, but can also be dominated by Larix laricina. Other tree species that may be present include Acer rubrum and Betula alleghaniensis. The ground layer may be dominated by mosses. |

This forest occurs in active floodplains and in relict stream sloughs in the outer portions of the West Gulf Coastal Plain; this region is sometimes considered the pine flatwoods part of the region. Dominant canopy species are typically Quercus laurifolia, Liquidambar styraciflua, Nyssa biflora, and Acer rubrum. It also appears to occur on flats in a pine flatwood landscape. Sabal minor can be common in the shrub layer. |

This glade community is found in the Interior Low Plateau region of the midwestern United States, particularly in the Shawnee Hills of southern Illinois, western Kentucky, and southern Indiana. It occupies the upper slopes and ridgetops of south-facing bluffs and escarpments. Bedrock is sandstone, which occurs on the surface as massive outcrops, level benches, and boulders. The substrate is a strongly acidic silt loam, which is thin, poorly developed, and very well-drained (dry to xeric). Quercus marilandica, Quercus stellata, and Juniperus virginiana are the dominant trees, which can be found scattered or in patches throughout the occurrence. These trees are generally small, stunted, and limby. The overstory cover seldom exceeds 50%, and the subcanopy is conspicuously thin or absent. Scattered individuals and patches of shrubs occur in this community, with Vaccinium arboreum and Ulmus alata the most commonly encountered. Schizachyrium scoparium, Danthonia spicata, Andropogon virginicus, and Dichanthelium spp. dominate the herbaceous layer, along with a diverse mixture of forbs. |
