Taxodium distichum / Cephalanthus occidentalis / Boehmeria cylindrica - Ceratophyllum muricatum Maritime Swamp Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34802.CEGL004079
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This association appears to be one of the most distinctive maritime swamps in the Atlantic Coastal Plain. It is currently known from a two sites in North Carolina and Virginia, both in wet dune swales on barrier islands. This example is a somewhat open forest with little to no understory or shrub layer present. The overstory is dominated by <i>Taxodium distichum</i> with lesser amounts of <i>Liquidambar styraciflua</i> and <i>Acer rubrum</i> also present. Woody vines are prominent in this association as in many maritime types of the region.

Pinus (discolor, cembroides) / Quercus arizonica / Muhlenbergia emersleyi Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.22262.PINUSDISCOLORCE
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This diverse `Madrean' woodland savanna association is known from the Borderlands area of southeastern Arizona and southwestern New Mexico, and in the Sierra Del Carmen of northeastern Coahuila, Mexico (and potentially in Big Bend National Park in Texas). It occurs from about 5400-6750 feet on gentle to steep hillslopes of northerly aspects. Stands are characterized by moderately open canopies (30-60% cover) of Pinus cembroides or Pinus discolor in association with the evergreen oaks Quercus arizonica or Quercus grisea. Juniperus deppeana is usually present but not dominant. The understory is diverse (96 species have been recorded for the association), grassy, and dominated by Muhlenbergia emersleyi. Other common grasses include Piptochaetium fimbriatum, Schizachyrium cirratum, and Bouteloua curtipendula.

Pinus palustris / Schizachyrium scoparium - Muhlenbergia expansa - Arnoglossum ovatum Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34931.CEGL004086
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This seasonally saturated longleaf pine - pond pine - loblolly pine woodland association is restricted to wet and moist Ultisols of the wiregrass gap region of South Carolina. The open canopy of this association is dominated by a combination of <i>Pinus palustris, Pinus serotina</i>, and <i>Pinus taeda</i>. The ground layer is dominated by <i>Schizachyrium scoparium, Muhlenbergia expansa, Ctenium aromaticum, Setaria parviflora</i>, and <i>Eryngium yuccifolium</i>. Several species thought to be indicative of shallow lime bedrock (i.e., coquina limestone) occur commonly in this association, including <i>Setaria parviflora, Panicum virgatum, Arnoglossum ovatum, Plantago sparsiflora</i>, and <i>Apocynum cannabinum</i>. However, the stand in Francis Marion National Forest, South Carolina, on which the present description is primarily based, occurs on a Wahee loam, an Ultisol not evidently associated with shallow limestone. The stand is directly adjacent to a hardwood-dominated drainage, however, so there may be some extruding limestone.
