Fraxinus latifolia - (Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa) / Cornus sericea Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34145.CEGL003390
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 From Kunze (1994): This community type occurs in the overflow plain segment of the Columbia River, from Puget Island to the gorge of Washington. It also occurs along all major streams in the southern Puget Trough and the Willamette Valley, Oregon. This community type occupies slightly higher topographic positions on floodplain terraces and natural levees along river channels. Portions receive seasonal flooding. Most of the stands, especially up-river from Longview, appear to be located above the bottomlands that would have been flooded for prolonged periods prior to flood control dams. Soils are silt-loams. This community type is characterized by the codominance of <i>Fraxinus latifolia </i>and <i>Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa (= Populus trichocarpa)</i>. The relative dominance of the two tree species is highly variable. <i>Cornus sericea (= Cornus stolonifera) </i>typically dominates the shrub layer but is sometimes replaced by <i>Sambucus racemosa</i>. In most stands, the understory has been degraded by grazing and introduced <i>Phalaris arundinacea </i>making it difficult to determine the original understory components. All stands are second-growth, except for a few scattered individual old-growth trees.

Atriplex canescens / Calycoseris parryi Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.21436.ATRIPLEXCANESCE
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This association is warm desertscrub found on nearly level alluvial plains adjacent to the Colorado River, elevation 700-800 m. The common shrubs are Atriplex canescens, Prosopis glandulosa and Suaeda moquinii (= Suaeda torreyana). The cacti Opuntia erinacea and Opuntia basilaris are common in this shrubland. Common ephemeral species include Calycoseris parryi, Chaenactis stevioides, Erodium texanum, and the Eurasian weed Bromus rubens. Near the river the Prosopis glandulosa density and size increase to form a thicket that resembles a mesquite 'bosque.' The soil is distinctive, a silty loam derived from the Grand Canyon series.
