This annual-dominated community occupies drawdown banks of blackwater rivers and other seasonally flooded muddy to silty banks. Annuals dominate this community and can include Eragrostis hypnoides, Lipocarpha micrantha (= Hemicarpha micrantha), Fimbristylis autumnalis, Micranthemum umbrosum, Lindernia dubia var. dubia, Lindernia dubia var. anagallidea, Fimbristylis perpusilla. Perennials are also present, including Juncus repens, Helenium flexuosum, Gratiola aurea, Sabatia kennedyana, but the community is generally dominated by a sparse to dense turf of annuals, most of the cover 2-10 cm tall. Seedlings and scattered larger individuals of trees such as Betula nigra and Acer rubrum may occur. Other species present may include Bidens frondosa, Boehmeria cylindrica, Commelina diffusa, Cyperus erythrorhizos, Cyperus polystachyos, Diodia virginiana, Digitaria sanguinalis, Echinochloa muricata, Echinodorus cordifolius, Eleocharis obtusa, Erechtites hieraciifolia, Hydrocotyle verticillata var. verticillata, Hypericum mutilum, Hypoxis curtissii (= Hypoxis leptocarpa), Justicia ovata, Ludwigia decurrens, Ludwigia palustris, Mitreola petiolata, Oldenlandia boscii, Panicum dichotomiflorum, Panicum rigidulum var. elongatum, Panicum verrucosum, Paspalum fluitans, Pluchea camphorata, Polygonum hydropiperoides, Polygonum pensylvanicum, Rhynchospora corniculata, Rotala ramosior, Sabatia calycina, Scirpus cyperinus, and Triadenum walteri. A wide range of other species may occur, including aliens, since seeds wash into this community from a variety of sources. This community often provides habitat for globally or regionally rare plant species, many of them adapted for this unusual environment. |

This association is an upland forest which occurs on moderate to steep sloping loess bluffs associated with the Mississippi River in the Upper East Gulf Coastal Plain (TNC Ecoregion 43). This upland deciduous hardwood forest association is dominated by Liquidambar styraciflua, Carya illinoinensis, and to a lesser extent Quercus nigra. Other less dominant trees are Quercus pagoda, Quercus shumardii, Quercus velutina, Quercus rubra, Quercus muehlenbergii, Celtis laevigata, Ulmus rubra, Gleditsia triacanthos, Fraxinus americana, and in one ravine bottom site Populus deltoides and Robinia pseudoacacia. Other canopy trees include Liriodendron tulipifera, Prunus serotina, Sassafras albidum, and Quercus michauxii. Subcanopy trees with the highest cover include Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus nigra, Morus rubra, Acer negundo, Liriodendron tulipifera, Celtis laevigata, Ulmus alata, Magnolia grandiflora, Quercus muehlenbergii, and Sassafras albidum. The complete lack of Quercus alba is notable and helps separate this from other associations. |

This is an old-growth evergreen conifer forest restricted to the Pend Oreille River drainage in northeastern Washington. It is associated with upper elevation stream terraces, benches and gentle lower slopes at elevations between 4000-5000 feet. Soils are humic and highly acid, have an abundance of large woody debris, and are covered with mosses and lichens. Stands are dominated by Tsuga heterophylla and often with Thuja plicata trees that form a complex vertical canopy. The undergrowth is a mixture of sparse, scattered deciduous shrubs such as Vaccinium membranaceum, Menziesia ferruginea and Lonicera utahensis, with a rich assortment of cool wet site low shrubs, ferns and forbs, such as, Rubus pedatus, Gymnocarpium dryopteris, Clintonia uniflora and Tiarella trifoliata var. unifoliata. |

This plant association is found on low-elevation floodplains of southeastern Alaska. It represents the most frequently disturbed portion of the riparian zone on well-drained undifferentiated alluvium. The stands occur below 60 m (200 feet) elevation. It has a relatively closed canopy averaging 55% cover. Picea sitchensis and Alnus rubra dominate the overstory, and Tsuga heterophylla is a common associate. Overstory height averages 45 m (148 feet) tall. The understory shrub layer is dominated by Rubus spectabilis, and Oplopanax horridus (= Echinopanax horridus) and Ribes bracteosum are also common. The herbaceous layer is sparse and includes Circaea alpina and Tiarella trifoliata. |

These are forested basin swamps of dune swales on barrier islands of North Carolina, Georgia, and possibly other mid-Atlantic coastal states. Stands are dominated by Acer rubrum, Nyssa biflora, or sometimes Liquidambar styraciflua or Fraxinus sp. Lower vegetational strata are variable but generally fairly low in diversity, consisting of characteristic wetland species tolerant of sheltered maritime conditions and long hydroperiods. |

This association is apparently limited to the western Olympic Peninsula, Washington, where it occurs in valley bottoms of major rivers. It is possible that it occurs farther south in coastal Washington or Oregon, though it would be rare there. It is found on fluvial terrace landforms, typically where riverine flooding appears to be currently infrequent (middle to upper terraces). Existing stands most often have a mixed broad-leaved deciduous-needle-leaved evergreen canopy, though some stands are dominated by the deciduous component with few evergreens. The canopy is a variable mixture of Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa (always present in tallest layer), Picea sitchensis (always present), Acer macrophyllum, and in smaller amounts Alnus rubra. Understory trees are mostly Picea sitchensis. The understory is characterized by the constant presence and typical abundance of the forb Oxalis oregana. The deciduous broad-leaved shrub layer varies from sparse to well-developed and is typified by Rubus spectabilis and Acer circinatum. Other herbs that have high constancy and are often codominant are Tolmiea menziesii, Polystichum munitum, and Circaea alpina. Stachys chamissonis var. cooleyae, Mitella ovalis, Athyrium filix-femina, Carex deweyana, Poa trivialis, and Ranunculus repens (latter two non-native) are typically present. The association should be distinguishable by the prominence of Populus balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa in the upper canopy, and >10% cover of Picea sitchensis and >5% cover of Oxalis oregana. |
