» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35144.CEGL004735
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This vegetation of sloughs and edges of backswamps in the Atlantic Coastal Plain has a mixture of cypress - gum swamp and bottomland hardwoods species, generally <i>Quercus lyrata, Quercus laurifolia, Taxodium distichum, Populus heterophylla, Fraxinus profunda, Quercus phellos, Ulmus americana, Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua, Carya aquatica, Planera aquatica</i>, and <i>Fraxinus pennsylvanica</i>. Along with the canopy species, other species that may be present in the subcanopy are <i>Ulmus alata, Ilex decidua, Carpinus caroliniana</i>, and <i>Diospyros virginiana</i>. The shrub layer ranges from sparse to a moderate coverage by species of the canopy and subcanopy layers with <i>Sabal minor</i> and <i>Arundinaria gigantea</i>. Herbaceous coverage usually is well-developed, and dominant species include <i>Carex joorii, Carex intumescens, Carex lupulina, Boehmeria cylindrica, Justicia ovata, Saururus cernuus</i>, and <i>Leersia lenticularis</i>. Other herbaceous species that occur include <i>Commelina virginica, Lobelia cardinalis, Ludwigia palustris, Diodia virginiana, Gratiola virginiana</i>, and others. The undergrowth (especially the prevalence of <i>Saururus cernuus</i>) is typical of cypress - gum swamps. This forest has well-developed canopy, subcanopy, and herbaceous strata.

Hesperostipa comata Colorado Front Range Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.19678.HESPEROSTIPACOM
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This association is restricted to Colorado. It is found at low elevations along the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains or on rock outcrops in the northeastern part of the state. It is found in a narrow elevational range from 5100-5760 feet, on eastern and western 'hogback' slopes and on rocky outcrops. It is restricted to soils derived from sandstone or limestone. Hesperostipa comata (= Stipa comata) is important in this herbaceous association.

Carex aquatilis var. dives - Comarum palustre Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34086.CEGL003433
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This herbaceous association occurs on flooded peat encroaching as floating mats on shores of lakes, and in low-gradient drainages where water is ponded or moving very slowly by sheet flow or percolation through the peat. It ranges from Oregon to British Columbia. The surface usually has several inches of standing water and the vegetation is typically very wet or flooded. It may occur on floating mats of peat on what was previously open water, and is a transitional vegetation type between aquatic bed vegetation and open mire or shrub swamp. Trees are rarely present and may include <i>Pinus contorta</i> or sapling <i>Picea sitchensis</i>. Shrubs are present in about half the plots at very low cover and may include <i>Ledum glandulosum, Vaccinium uliginosum, Spiraea douglasii, Lonicera involucrata</i>, or <i>Salix hookeriana</i>. The herb layer is diverse, dominated by <i>Carex aquatilis var. dives</i> and <i>Comarum palustre (= Potentilla palustris)</i>, with lesser amounts of <i>Nuphar polysepala (= Nuphar lutea ssp. polysepala), Athyrium filix-femina, Hypericum anagalloides, Carex exsiccata, Equisetum fluviatile, Oenanthe sarmentosa</i>, and <i>Lycopus uniflorus</i>. <i>Carex obnupta</i> occurred only in trace amounts in the plots sampled, but may be more abundant in some sites. <i>Sphagnum</i> and other mosses are often present but not dominant.

Nelumbo lutea Permanently Flooded Temperate Herbaceous Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.18525.NELUMBOLUTEAPER
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This alliance includes essentially monospecific Nelumbo lutea communities, in either natural wetlands or in artificial impoundments, sometimes with scattered Cephalanthus occidentalis. Other floating-leaved aquatic plant species that may be present include Nuphar lutea ssp. advena and Nymphaea odorata. In shallow depressional wetlands in the Coastal Plain of Florida, Nelumbo lutea occurs in an admixture with Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani (= Scirpus tabernaemontani), Pontederia cordata, Juncus effusus, Typha latifolia, Eichhornia crassipes (alien), Hydrocotyle spp., and seasonally with floating aquatics, such as Salvinia minima, Spirodela spp., Lemna spp., and Azolla caroliniana.

Taxodium distichum - Persea palustris - Chrysobalanus icaco Seasonally Flooded Forest Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.21097.TAXODIUMDISTICH
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This alliance consists of forests known as 'tropical bayhead forests' and 'wet tropical hammocks,' occurring in seasonally flooded situations in southern Florida. They characteristically have a mixture of tropical and temperate species. Taxodium distichum, Persea palustris, and Chrysobalanus icaco are characteristic. Other typical canopy and subcanopy species that are not present in all associations include Acer rubrum var. rubrum, Annona glabra, Celtis laevigata, Conocarpus erectus, Ficus aurea, Fraxinus caroliniana, Magnolia virginiana, Metopium toxiferum, Myrsine floridana, Quercus laurifolia, Rhizophora mangle, Roystonea elata, Sabal palmetto, Salix caroliniana, and Sideroxylon salicifolium. Ferns, especially Blechnum serrulatum, are often abundant.

Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa - Opuntia engelmannii var. lindheimeri - Borrichia frutescens Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.25348.PROSOPISGLANDUL
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This shrubland occurs on alkaline saline clay loams a few feet above the tidal flat, along the southern Gulf of Mexico of Texas and Tamaulipas. Due probably to the shallow depth to the saline water table, Prosopis glandulosa var. glandulosa is generally stunted, seldom exceeding 5 m in height, and rather scattered, seldom occupying more than 25% cover. Lower shrubs or suffrutescent perennials are more common, including Opuntia engelmannii var. lindheimeri, Borrichia frutescens, Isocoma drummondii, Maytenus phyllanthoides (= Maytenus texana), and Prosopis reptans; such cover is often nearly continuous. Important herb species include Monanthochloe littoralis, Buchloe dactyloides, Setaria leucopila, Spartina spartinae, Billieturnera helleri, and Pappophorum vaginatum. Lenophyllum texanum, a Tamaulipan Thornscrub endemic, is sometimes found in this community. This community often intermingles with grasslands dominated by Spartina spartinae.

Pinus taeda - Quercus laurifolia / Vaccinium elliottii - Arundinaria gigantea Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35404.CEGL004736
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This association is apparently a "high subtype" of blackwater bottomland hardwood-pine forest of the sandhills of the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and possibly other states. The canopy would be expected to be dominated by <i>Pinus taeda</i> and <i>Quercus laurifolia</i>, with an understory characterized by <i>Vaccinium elliottii</i> and <i>Arundinaria gigantea</i>. More detailed information is needed.
