Ribes lacustre - Ribes hudsonianum / Glyceria striata Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32572.CEGL003446
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This is a riparian, deciduous shrubland occurring in small patches throughout the southern and central portions of the Blue Mountains and the eastern Cascades in Oregon. It is found on small to medium-sized streams in mid elevations in the mountains. Sites include floodplains and streambanks at moderate to moderately high elevations mostly above the local elevational range of mountain alder. Valleys are very narrow and V- or trough-shaped with very high gradients and gentle to moderately steep side slopes. Ribes lacustre and Ribes hudsonianum (averaging over 1 m in height) form a scattered to dense canopy over Glyceria striata (= Glyceria elata) and a variety of mesic forbs including Galium triflorum, Streptopus amplexifolius, Circaea alpina, Aconitum columbianum, Mitella pentandra, and Saxifraga odontoloma (= Saxifraga arguta). Average height of the herbaceous vegetation is 37 cm (ranging from 20-51 cm). It is distinguished from similar shrublands by the saturated soils and dense understory of Glyceria striata.

Pinus jeffreyi / Quercus vacciniifolia - Garrya buxifolia Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.33435.CEGL003447
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This woodland is restricted to a narrow area of serpentine habitat in southwestern Oregon and potentially northwestern California. These woodlands are found entirely at low to mid elevations (averaging 636 m or 3070 feet), on stony (51% cover of surface rock) serpentine or peridotite soils. Aspects tended to be south to southeast, and the slope ranged from 8-35%, but stands were found from ridgetops to draws. It is an open woodland, dominated by Pinus jeffreyi at about 20% cover in the canopy, generally the only tree species found in the canopy and understory. Individuals of Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus attenuata, Pinus monticola, and Umbellularia californica are found as understory species at low cover in most stands. These woodlands are characterized by their dense cover of evergreen, broad-leaved shrubs. Quercus vacciniifolia (26%), Garrya buxifolia (22%), Arctostaphylos nevadensis (22%), and Mahonia repens (1%) were found in all sampled stands. Forbs are minor components of these stands, with Xerophyllum tenax, Aspidotis densa, and Whipplea modesta reported.
