Cladium mariscus ssp. jamaicense - Fimbristylis castanea - Symphyotrichum tenuifolium Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.23904.CLADIUMMARISCUS
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro...  0 This freshwater marsh association of the Florida Keys is dominated by Cladium mariscus ssp. jamaicense. The typical expression of this type is an open herbaceous marsh, but it may take on the appearance of a low swamp forest when invaded by woody species such as Conocarpus erectus and/or Laguncularia racemosa. It occurs primarily in depressions in the interior of the lower Florida Keys, but may also be found in narrow bands in several Upper Keys locations where islands are wide. The depressions range from shallow to deep; deeper depressions are often filled with peat, while shallow examples have poorly developed soils which may be little more than a thin layer of calcitic mud. In either case, freshwater is generally ponded during the wet season, and rarely far from the soil surface at any time of year.

Pinus monticola - Pseudotsuga menziesii / Quercus vacciniifolia - Lithocarpus densiflorus Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.32812.CEGL003449
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 These woodlands are restricted to a very narrow area of serpentine habitat in southwestern Oregon and northwestern California. They occur at low to mid elevations, ranging from 610 to 1220 m (2000-4000 feet), generally on rocky, serpentine or rarely hornblende or basalt slopes. Aspects are mostly southeast, but range to south and west. Slope position range from ridgetops to the upper 1/3 slope. This is a woodland dominated by <i>Pinus monticola</i> (17-20% cover), <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i> (5-8%), and occasionally <i>Pinus attenuata</i> (6%) or <i>Pinus contorta</i> (30%). The shrub cover is fairly high and quite diverse, although <i>Lithocarpus densiflorus</i> (<i>var. echinoides</i> probably) (as a tall shrub at 13-16% cover) and <i>Quercus vacciniifolia</i> (23-33% cover) always are dominant. <i>Arctostaphylos nevadensis</i> (5-17%), <i>Vaccinium virgatum (= Vaccinium parviflorum)</i> (8%) are also present in all but a few stands. Other shrubs, including <i>Mahonia repens, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californicus), Garrya buxifolia</i>, and <i>Amelanchier alnifolia</i> can also be found. Forbs are minor components of these stands, with <i>Xerophyllum tenax</i> (3-7%), <i>Pyrola</i> spp. (1%), and <i>Whipplea modesta</i> (3%) usually present.
