Juniperus osteosperma / Hesperostipa comata Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31935.CEGL002815
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This woodland association occurs on slopes, hills, benches and alluvial terraces in the Colorado Plateau of western Colorado and eastern Utah. Sites are on level to moderately sloping terrain that may be oriented to any aspect. Elevation of most stands ranges from 1423 to 1880 m (4670-6165 feet) but may occur as high as 2200 m (7215 feet) on warm southerly exposures that discourage establishment of Pinus edulis. Most sites have sandy soils derived from eolian sands, sandstone or alluvium, but at Capitol Reef National Park, some stands occur on barren shale slopes of the Carmel Formation. Soils are generally sandy loams, with a few stands on clay loams. Gravel, bare ground or cryptobiotic crusts cover much of the unvegetated surface. The vegetation is characterized by a savanna-like distribution of 2- to 5-m tall Juniperus osteosperma trees that range in cover from 5 to 15% and the bunchgrass Hesperostipa comata that ranges in cover from 5 to 25%. Shrubs are generally present but too sparse to form a layer. Common species include Coleogyne ramosissima, Ephedra torreyana, Ephedra viridis, Eriogonum microthecum, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Opuntia polyacantha. The herbaceous layer is diverse and has up to 30% cover, including Hesperostipa. Other characteristic graminoids include Poa fendleriana, Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua gracilis, Pleuraphis jamesii, and Achnatherum hymenoides. Forbs may be diverse but contribute little cover; Hymenoxys richardsonii and Mirabilis multiflora are among the few species recorded in sampled plots.

Fraxinus quadrangulata - Quercus macrocarpa - Quercus muehlenbergii / Arundinaria gigantea ssp. gigantea / Elymus spp. Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35939.CEGL004436
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This historic community was restricted to the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky. The tree layer was dominated by variable mixtures of Fraxinus quadrangulata, Quercus macrocarpa, and Quercus muehlenbergii, with various other species as well, especially Juglans nigra, Aesculus glabra, and Gymnocladus dioicus, and in moister areas Carya laciniosa and Quercus shumardii. Arundinaria gigantea ssp. gigantea was locally dominant, and sometimes very extensive. This type graded locally to Arundinaria-dominated areas with scattered to nearly absent trees [see ~Fraxinus quadrangulata - Quercus macrocarpa / Arundinaria gigantea ssp. gigantea Wooded Shrubland Alliance (A0794)$$]. Shrubs include Symphoricarpos orbiculatus. The herb layer was well-developed in more open areas (probably as a result of fire and bison-browse), with species such as Trifolium stoloniferum, Elymus spp., Ageratina altissima var. altissima, Amphicarpaea bracteata, and possibly Tridens flavus and Poa pratensis?. The presence of Acer saccharum in present vegetation related to this historic type is a symptom of fire suppression.

Populus tremuloides / Amelanchier alnifolia - Symphoricarpos oreophilus / Mixed Graminoid Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31932.CEGL002816
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This aspen forest is found in northwestern Colorado and southwestern Wyoming on moderate to moderately steep slopes (10-30%) of mountains, plateaus and buttes between 2242 and 2724 m elevation. It occurs in small stands on toeslopes, slump slopes, benches, and ridges often with north aspects or in other areas that collect snow or have a higher soil moisture throughout the growing season (seeps). The unvegetated surface generally has low cover of small and large rocks and high cover of leaf litter and downed wood, although in some stands the cover by large rocks may be as high as 40%. Soils are well-drained to poorly drained with soil textures ranging from sandy loam to silt to clay loam. The vegetation is characterized by an open to dense tree canopy 2-10 m tall that is dominated by Populus tremuloides with open to dense shrub layers dominated by tall shrubs Amelanchier alnifolia or Amelanchier utahensis and short shrub Symphoricarpos oreophilus. Scattered Pseudotsuga menziesii or Pinus flexilis may be present in some stands. Other tall shrubs may include Salix scouleriana and Prunus virginiana. Short- and dwarf-shrub associates, such as Artemisia tridentata ssp. tridentata, Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana, Juniperus communis, Mahonia repens, Paxistima myrsinites, Rosa woodsii, Shepherdia canadensis, and Ribes cereum, may be present with low cover. A.1034
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.804.A1034 NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTED
EcoArt 2002 0 Shrublands in this southwestern alliance occur along drainages that dissect bajadas and mesas in the Chihuahuan and Sonoran deserts. Elevations range from 640-1030 m. Stands are restricted by the arid climate to arroyo riparian zones and adjacent floodplains. The alluvial soils are generally sandy often with cobbles and boulders. These shrublands utilize moisture from the water table and are dependent on the intermittent flows and flooding of the channel to supplement soil moisture and maintain the groundwater levels. The sparse to moderately dense shrub layer is dominated by ~Hymenoclea monogyra$ usually with significant densities of ~Baccharis sarothroides$. ~Ambrosia ambrosioides$ is also typically present in lesser amounts. Less frequent or abundant shrubs include ~Acacia greggii, Parkinsonia microphylla, Celtis pallida, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Olneya tesota$, and ~Prosopis velutina$. The herbaceous layer is typically sparse. Two common herbs are ~Mentzelia pumila$ and ~Polanisia dodecandra ssp. trachysperma (= Polanisia trachysperma)$. Adjacent vegetation includes stands of ~Prosopis$ spp. bosques or desertscrub dominated by ~Larrea tridentata$ or ~Prosopis$ spp.
