Taxodium distichum / Cephalanthus occidentalis / Juncus repens Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35104.CEGL004653
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This community occurs on the sandy and peaty, seasonally flooded shores of Lake Drummond (Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge) and Outer Coastal Plain vernal ponds in Virginia. Taxodium distichum forms an open canopy (averaging about 50% cover). The shrub stratum is dominated by Cephalanthus occidentalis and seedlings of Taxodium distichum, with Clethra alnifolia, Leucothoe racemosa, Toxicodendron radicans ssp. radicans, and Acer rubrum also present. Herbaceous species typical of forested swamps, such as Triadenum walteri, Bidens discoidea, and Cuscuta compacta, occupy the peaty bases of trees and shrubs. Larger areas of exposed sand support Juncus repens, Eleocharis quadrangulata, Panicum verrucosum, Fuirena pumila, Cyperus polystachyos var. texensis, Cyperus odoratus, Fimbristylis autumnalis, Lindernia dubia, Echinochloa muricata, and Panicum dichotomiflorum.

A.735
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.2368.A735 NOT CURRENTLY ACCEPTED
EcoArt 2002 0 This alliance consists of tidal shrublands dominated by stunted ~Rhizophora mangle$. Communities of this alliance occur in more stressed sites than ~Rhizophora mangle$ forests and have shorter individuals (less than 5 m, and usually only 0.5-2 m tall); the physiognomic structure varies from nearly closed to open (canopy closure 25-90%). Communities of this alliance occur in highly stressed situations (such as full saline, shallowly underlain by oolite). ~Rhizophora mangle$ is sometimes the only vascular plant present, though other characteristic species, including ~Cladium mariscus ssp. jamaicense$ and ~Avicennia germinans$, are often present. Sometimes, these communities grade landward to ~Rhizophora mangle$ forests. Hydrologically, these communities are inundated for long periods, and occur not on peats but on calcareous muds 2-30 cm deep over limestone.

Decodon verticillatus Semipermanently Flooded Shrubland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31355.CEGL005089
Eastern Ecology Working Group of... 0 This shrub border occurs as a fringe along aquatic edges of lakes and streams in the northeastern states. Decodon verticillatus forms a dense, often monotypic, tangle. Cephalanthus occidentalis can occur, but with less abundance than Decodon verticillatus. Herbaceous species vary widely, but may include Nuphar variegata (= Nuphar lutea ssp. variegata), Nymphaea odorata, Peltandra virginica, Pontederia cordata, Utricularia spp., and Potamogeton spp. Where Decodon-dominated vegetation occurs adjacent to bog mats, it is considered a part of ~Chamaedaphne calyculata - (Gaylussacia dumosa) - Decodon verticillatus / Woodwardia virginica Dwarf-shrubland (CEGL006008)$$.

Tsuga heterophylla - (Thuja plicata, Pseudotsuga menziesii) / Polystichum munitum - Blechnum spicant Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.37345.CEGL002843
0 This closed-canopy forested community occurs at lower elevations on the south coast of British Columbia and adjacent islands, at lower elevations and major valleys along east Vancouver Island north to Kelsey Bay (0-700 m), and at lower elevations on the western Olympic Peninsula of Washington. It occurs as small to medium patches on sites with soils that are moist for a significant part of the growing season. Overstories are closed and dominated by high cover of Tsuga heterophylla, with frequent and variable cover of Thuja plicata and/or Pseudotsuga menziesii. The moderately well-developed shrub layer is dominated by moderate cover of regenerating Tsuga heterophylla and Thuja plicata, often together with Gaultheria shallon. Polystichum munitum predominates in the herb layer, with Blechnum spicant usually present with low to moderate cover. The moderately well-developed moss layer consists primarily of a high cover of Hylocomium splendens.

Carex torta Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36199.CEGL004103
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This association accommodates herbaceous alluvial wetlands in which Carex torta is a dominant or characteristic species. It occupies sand, gravel, and rock bars along small rivers and streams in valleys and gorges in the Southern Appalachians, ranging west into the Cumberland Plateau and the Interior Low Plateau, and north into the Central Appalachians, Allegheny Mountains, and Piedmont. This association is characterized by light-requiring, tough-rooted herbaceous perennials tolerant of frequent inundation and flood-scouring. Carex torta often forms dense, extensive colonies. Associated species vary with geography but can include Polygonum sagittatum, Dichanthelium clandestinum, Solidago rugosa ssp. aspera, Juncus effusus, Equisetum arvense, Onoclea sensibilis, Vernonia noveboracensis, Lycopus virginicus, Lobelia cardinalis, Symphyotrichum dumosum (= Aster dumosus), Lycopus virginicus, Osmunda regalis, Hypericum mutilum, Eupatorium fistulosum, Solidago patula, Boehmeria cylindrica, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Acalypha rhomboidea, Hypericum mutilum, Impatiens capensis, Leersia oryzoides, and Symphyotrichum lateriflorum (= Aster lateriflorus). Physiognomy of this type varies from strictly herbaceous to wooded herbaceous to shrubby. Scattered shrubs and small, battered specimens of Platanus occidentalis, Betula nigra, Cornus amomum, Alnus serrulata, and Carpinus caroliniana are present in some stands. An overhanging canopy may include Platanus occidentalis, Betula alleghaniensis var. alleghaniensis, or Acer rubrum. Overhanging shrubs often include Rhododendron maximum. Stands in disturbed landscapes may be heavily invaded by Microstegium vimineum, Polygonum caespitosum var. longisetum, and other weedy exotics.
