This association is located within a subalpine Wet Hypermaritime Mountain Hemlock Subzone (MHwh) along the outer coast from approximately 500 to 1100 m above sea level. It occurs on broad ridge crests and moderate upper to lower slopes, where topographic conditions cause slowly moving seepage waters to saturate the shallow soils. Soil nutritional status in this community is widely variable from poor to rich, but this is not well-defined floristically, due in large part to the subalpine wet hypermaritime climate and the predominantly wet, poorly aerated soils. This low-productivity forest community is dominated by <i>Tsuga mertensiana</i>, with variable amounts of <i>Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (= Callitropsis nootkatensis)</i> and <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i>. In addition to regeneration of the above tree species, the sparse to moderate cover shrub layer includes <i>Vaccinium ovalifolium</i> and <i>Vaccinium alaskaense</i>. Characteristic species in the lightly developed herb layer include moderate cover of <i>Veratrum viride, Calamagrostis nutkaensis</i> (drier sites), and low cover of <i>Nephrophyllidium crista-galli (= Fauria crista-galli)</i>. Other commonly occurring species include <i>Coptis aspleniifolia, Rubus pedatus, Cornus canadensis</i>, scattered <i>Caltha leptosepala</i>, and <i>Carex</i> spp. Common species in the well-developed moss layer are <i>Rhytidiadelphus loreus</i> (dominant), <i>Scapania</i> spp., <i>Hylocomium splendens</i>, and <i>Rhizomnium glabrescens</i>. A number of species which should be either absent or of insignificant cover include <i>Lysichiton americanus, Leptarrhena pyrolifolia, Phyllodoce empetriformis, Cassiope mertensiana</i>, and <i>Harrimanella stelleriana</i>. |

This association is located within a subalpine Wet Hypermaritime Mountain Hemlock Subzone (MHwh) along the outer coast from approximately 500 to 1100 m above sea level. It follows the outer mainland British Columbia coast from Rivers Inlet, beyond the tip of northern Vancouver Island, northward to Portland Canal, and includes the Queen Charlotte Islands. Steep middle to upper and crest slope positions with imperfectly to moderately well-drained, upland organic (Folisolic) soils with mor humus forms, over bedrock and colluvial or morainal veneers are common. Sandy to loamy mineral soils on morainal veneers are also found. This scrubby, often dense forest is codominated by <i>Tsuga mertensiana</i> and <i>Tsuga heterophylla</i>, with lower cover of <i>Picea sitchensis</i>. <i>Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (= Callitropsis nootkatensis)</i> is frequently present. In addition to the above tree species, the light to moderate cover shrub layer (growing in canopy gaps) includes <i>Vaccinium ovalifolium, Vaccinium alaskaense, Vaccinium parvifolium</i>, and occasional <i>Menziesia ferruginea</i>. The herb layer is minimal; various species may occur but almost always with very low cover. These include <i>Coptis aspleniifolia, Veratrum viride, Calamagrostis nutkaensis, Rubus pedatus</i>, and <i>Listera cordata</i>. The moss layer is very well-developed and dominated by <i>Rhytidiadelphus loreus</i>, with <i>Hylocomium splendens, Rhizomnium glabrescens, Scapania bolanderi, Pellia neesiana</i>, and <i>Plagiothecium undulatum</i>. There is only one relatively drier and poorer woodland community recognized, i.e., ~<i>Tsuga mertensiana - Picea sitchensis - Chamaecyparis nootkatensis - Pinus contorta / Calamagrostis nutkaensis</i> Woodland (CEGL002841)$$, and it is exclusively found on the shallowest soils on exposed rocky knolls. Species characteristic of other associations and normally not found in this community include <i>Phyllodoce empetriformis, Cassiope mertensiana, Luetkea pectinata, Peltigera</i> spp., <i>Caltha leptosepala, Nephrophyllidium crista-galli (= Fauria crista-galli), Carex</i> spp., and <i>Lysichiton americanus</i>. |

This alliance contains spruce-fir forest communities of northern New England and New York. The canopy may be dominated by Picea rubens, Abies balsamea, or codominated by both species. Typical canopy associates include Betula alleghaniensis and Betula papyrifera, with an understory of Sorbus americana, Acer spicatum, and Acer pensylvanicum. Common herbs of this alliance include Clintonia borealis, Oxalis montana, Huperzia lucidula (= Lycopodium lucidulum), Cornus canadensis, Maianthemum canadense, Oclemena acuminata (= Aster acuminatus), Coptis trifolia, and Trientalis borealis. The bryophyte layer is generally very well-developed, characterized by Bazzania trilobata, Brotherella recurvans, Pleurozium schreberi, and many others. This alliance occurs primarily on acidic till derived from granites or from sandstone, at elevations near sea level up to 4500 feet. |

This mesic, subcalcareous forest of the West Gulf Coastal Plain of eastern Texas and western Louisiana is typically dominated by an uneven-aged canopy of Fagus grandifolia and Quercus alba. It is further characterized by a rich, vernal understory flora and the presence of a number of species which indicate both mesic and calciphilic habitats in the West Gulf Coastal Plain, such as Acer leucoderme, Acer barbatum, Cercis canadensis var. canadensis, Hamamelis virginiana, Solidago auriculata, Lithospermum tuberosum, Cynoglossum virginianum, Uvularia perfoliata, Dioscorea villosa, and Smilax pumila. This type remains incompletely documented and understood due to relatively recent recognition of the existence of Acer leucoderme in eastern Texas. Viburnum dentatum, Viburnum acerifolium, Aesculus pavia var. pavia, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Asimina triloba, Ostrya virginiana, Carpinus caroliniana ssp. caroliniana, Cornus florida, and Styrax grandifolius are also indicative of this type. |
