Eleocharis macrostachya Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31862.CEGL005303
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This wetland community is known throughout cismontane California from the Central Valley, Central and South Coast Ranges, to the upper montane in the Sierra Nevada. It is a small-patch wetland type that is often overlooked. It occurs on wet and saturated areas that do not dry out during the growing season, except in vernal pool situations. Stands are dominated by Eleocharis macrostachya. These are dense, low to moderately tall, forb and graminoid communities. Forb cover can be quite high, and a mixture of forbs will infrequently dominate the community. However, it is the cover of Eleocharis macrostachya, which typically exceeds 50%, that distinguishes this community from others with high forb cover.

Dichanthelium scoparium - Boehmeria cylindrica / Sphagnum spp. - Polytrichum commune Herbaceous Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.36090.CEGL004916
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 These acidic hillside seeps of the southeastern Oklahoma Coastal Plain are herbaceous wetlands formed over beds of decaying vegetable matter, which is loosely consolidated and contains so much water that the surface shakes under foot. These communities occur mainly on the Antlers Sand Formation and are characterized by their topographic position at the base of slopes and on the sides of sandhills. The seep community is dissected by slowly flowing water or small stagnant pools. The composition of stands of this type is variable, but is characterized by dominance by a variety of grasses, sedges, and aster family members. Dichanthelium scoparium is characteristic. This or related vegetation may also be found in sandy or peaty depressions.

Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This late-successional bottomland forest occurs on calcareous substrates on terraces in brownwater river floodplains in the East Gulf Coastal Plain. This forest contains a relatively large number of canopy species, and dominance is variable from occurrence to occurrence. Quercus nigra, Quercus pagoda, and Carya alba are commonly the codominant species. Canopy associates include Pinus taeda, Pinus glabra, Liquidambar styraciflua, Quercus phellos, Quercus michauxii, Quercus shumardii, Carya glabra, Carya laciniosa, Carya ovata, and Carya myristiciformis. The subcanopy is well-developed and may be composed of canopy species with Acer rubrum, Crataegus marshallii, Ulmus alata, Cornus florida, Cercis canadensis, and Carpinus caroliniana. Callicarpa americana and Chionanthus virginicus are common in the shrub layer. The herbaceous layer contains seedlings of canopy species, as well as Chasmanthium sessiliflorum, Arundinaria gigantea, Dioscorea villosa, Mitchella repens, Berchemia scandens, Vitis rotundifolia, Dichanthelium boscii, Scutellaria integrifolia, Smilax rotundifolia, Commelina virginica, Bignonia capreolata, and others.
