This association occurs on finer-textured, loess-influenced soils in eastern Louisiana and is likely also in adjacent southwestern Mississippi. Characteristic herbaceous species include Schizachyrium scoparium, Coreopsis tripteris, Baptisia bracteata var. leucophaea, Symphyotrichum patens (= Aster patens), Symphyotrichum adnatum (= Aster adnatus), Quercus falcata, Quercus marilandica, Quercus stellata, Schizachyrium tenerum, Salix humilis var. tristis, Pteroglossaspis ecristata, Chamaecrista fasciculata, Andropogon gerardii, Sorghastrum nutans, Tephrosia spp., Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa), Vaccinium darrowii, Liatris squarrosa, Liatris pycnostachya, Rhexia alifanus, Paspalum floridanum, and Callirhoe papaver. Legumes are abundant and diverse. Quercus incana can be scattered. This association occurs on Tangi (Typic Fragiudult), Ruston, and Smithdale soils, all fine-textured, loamy soils, with loess influence. |

This xeric Pinus palustris association occurs in the Florida parishes of eastern Louisiana and may range into adjacent areas of southern Mississippi. This area represents a western attenuation of East Gulf Coastal Plain longleaf pine sandhills, beyond the natural range of a number of taxa distributed farther eastward. In addition, sites in this region tend to have siltier, less coarse-textured soils than are typically found in Florida (Peet and Allard 1990). Stands of this type are dominated by an open canopy of Pinus palustris. A subcanopy containing Quercus incana indicates the presence of finer-textured, siltier soils. Sporobolus clandestinus is a typical herbaceous component. Other characteristic species include Schizachyrium scoparium, Commelina erecta, Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa), Ilex ambigua, Pityopsis graminifolia, Vaccinium arboreum, and Zornia bracteata. |

These maritime hammocks occur in small parcels along the shoreline of the northern Gulf of Mexico in western Florida. The canopy is dominated by Quercus virginiana, Carya pallida, Carya glabra, Quercus hemisphaerica, Quercus geminata, and Magnolia grandiflora. Other typical canopy trees are Persea borbonia, Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola, and Pinus clausa. Shrubs are often dense and composed of the canopy species, as well as Vaccinium stamineum, Ilex opaca, Ilex vomitoria, Morus rubra, Osmanthus americanus, Sideroxylon lanuginosum, Serenoa repens, Callicarpa americana, Aesculus pavia, Amelanchier arborea, Asimina parviflora, Clinopodium coccineum (= Calamintha coccinea), and Quercus myrtifolia. Herbs are sparse and include Smilax pumila, Mitchella repens, Desmodium spp., Erythrina herbacea, Galactia microphylla, and Chasmanthium sessiliflorum. The epiphytes Tillandsia usneoides and Pleopeltis polypodioides (= Polypodium polypodioides) are found on the oaks. |

This association comprises kelp beds of rocky coasts of New England dominated by red and brown algae and occurring in the sublittoral zone along rocky coastline habitat. Laminaria agardhii, Alaria spp., and Chondrus crispus are dominant and conspicuous. Other common associates can include Porphyra laciniata, Ceramium rubrum, and Hildenbrandtia prototypus. Additional species of red, green, and brown algae can occur in areas with greater light penetration. There is seasonal and geographic variability in species composition between areas north versus south of Cape Cod, which forms a major boundary between colder waters to the north fed by arctic currents and warmer waters to the south fed by the Gulf Stream. |
