This vegetation occurs on somewhat saline clayey to loamy soils on more-or-less level, 'upland' areas, a few feet above sea level, along the bases of lomas along Laguna Madre in southern Texas typically dominated by ~<i>Citharexylum berlandieri - Yucca treculeana - Ebenopsis ebano - Phaulothamnus spinescens</i> Shrubland (CEGL002170)$$. <i>Spartina patens</i> is dominant, but herbaceous diversity can be fairly high in comparison to other <i>Spartina</i>-dominated communities in the same region. Woody plants other than subshrubs are scarce. Characteristic species include <i>Prosopis reptans, Sophora tomentosa, Maytenus phyllanthoides, Andropogon glomeratus, Bothriochloa saccharoides, Spartina spartinae, Sporobolus virginicus, Ambrosia psilostachya, Iva texensis (= Iva angustifolia var. latior)</i>, and <i>Palafoxia texana</i>. |

Platanus occidentalis - Juglans (major, microcarpa) Temporarily Flooded Woodland Alliance » more details

These woodlands occur in central and western Texas on wet flats and high-energy rivershores; they are naturally or artificially disturbed and therefore maintain an open canopy. These stands are typically dominated by Platanus occidentalis. One association may have Juglans major as a codominant, another (e.g., in the Edwards Plateau of Texas) is typically dominated by Platanus occidentalis and few other trees, with Juglans microcarpa as a shrub. Salix nigra, Juglans microcarpa, and/or Juglans major may be present, as well as Acer grandidentatum and Prunus serotina var. eximia. This alliance is best documented by association-level data in the Edwards Plateau and adjacent Chihuahuan Desert of Texas; its presence in other parts of the southeastern U.S. remains speculative. |

This dry-mesic Pinus taeda forest is found in eastern Texas in the Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain. It occurs on an unusually steep, north-facing slope close to the Neches River, in Houston County, Texas. The community has calciphilic tendencies due to the underlying presence of the calcareous Weches Formation. Pinus taeda is the dominant overstory tree, but Pinus echinata is also quite common. The subcanopy abundance of Quercus michauxii is an extremely unusual feature of this community. Calciphilic indicators, including Acer barbatum, Ostrya virginiana, Fraxinus americana, and Cercis canadensis, are present, along with several caric sedges (Carex oxylepis, Carex caroliniana, Carex amphibola, Carex cephalophora, and Carex albicans var. australis (= Carex physorhyncha)). Thaspium barbinode may also be indicative of calciphilic conditions. |

Woodlands of the Atlantic and Gulf coastal plains dominated by ~Pinus taeda$. In the Atlantic Coastal Plain, natural examples of this alliance include maritime woodlands of barrier islands that occur on foredunes. Trees in these maritime woodlands often have multiple trunks and spreading branches. Herbaceous cover is usually low. Canopy associates include ~Quercus phellos, Quercus falcata$, and ~Quercus virginiana$. One rare community in this alliance occurs on swamp islands protected from fire in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain. Associated species include ~Quercus hemisphaerica, Osmanthus americanus var. americanus, Ilex glabra, Ilex opaca var. opaca, Persea palustris$, and ~Quercus nigra$. Other associations, including some vegetation of Louisiana, result from thinning of plantations, or disturbance by fire of ~Pinus taeda$ forests. One other semi-natural example occurs on military reservations and is at least in part the result of fires set by military training. It may occur both within or outside of the natural range of ~Pinus palustris$. In the former case, it is present where ~Pinus palustris$ has failed to regenerate. |
