Cirsium scopulorum Herbaceous Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.25561.CIRSIUMSCOPULOR
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 Vegetation in this alliance occurs on rocky, talus slopes in the alpine tundra in the Colorado Front Range. Strong westerly winds are common in the winter and spring. Stands are found in the lower alpine tundra between 3350-3450 m elevation on unstable, moving scree slopes. Stands are usually located on south-facing slopes on warm, dry microsites. The ground is covered with cobble-sized rocks and is nearly blown free of snow in the winter. Soils are young and poorly developed. The majority of the ground surface is covered with rock with the vegetation occurring in patches between the rocks. Cirsium scopulorum and Polemonium viscosum are the dominant species. Phacelia sericea, Campanula rotundifolia, Heuchera parvifolia var. nivalis, and Trisetum spicatum are common associates. Moss cover is very sparse due to the dry, rocky substrate.

Coleogyne ramosissima Shrubland Alliance
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.22317.COLEOGYNERAMOSI
Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This alliance occurs at the transition between the Mojave and Great Basin deserts on mountain slopes, mesas or bajadas bordering intermountain basins. Soils are highly variable across the large range of this vegetation type, but are generally coarse-textured and well-drained. This vegetation is characterized by a sparse to moderately dense shrub layer of Coleogyne ramosissima. Although Coleogyne is apparently restricted to a particular elevational zone, associated shrub species can be of either Mojavean or Great Basin affinities. Shrub species may include Menodora spinescens, Picrothamnus desertorum (= Artemisia spinescens), Eriogonum fasciculatum, Ephedra spp., Atriplex spp., Grayia spinosa, Larrea tridentata, Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus, Yucca baccata, Gutierrezia sarothrae, and Opuntia spp. Occasionally, scattered individuals of Yucca brevifolia may be emergent through the shrub layer. The herbaceous layer is typically sparse. Species of Eriogonum, Navarretia, Sphaeralcea, Pleuraphis jamesii (= Hilaria jamesii), Mirabilis multiflora, Achnatherum hymenoides (= Oryzopsis hymenoides), and Achnatherum speciosum (= Stipa speciosa) may be present. Diagnostic of this alliance is the dominance of Coleogyne ramosissima in the shrub layer.
