This black locust ruderal forest is found locally throughout the eastern United States. Stands often establish on old fields abandoned after agricultural cropping or pasturing or around old homesites. In some areas it occurs on post-agricultural floodplain terraces. This vegetation has also become established following the planting of Robinia pseudoacacia to stabilize and enrich nutrient-poor soils that are subject to erosion. The vegetation is dominated by Robinia pseudoacacia. Associated woody species vary from site to site and include Prunus serotina, Juniperus virginiana, Ulmus americana, Ulmus rubra, Carya ovata, Celtis occidentalis, Juglans nigra, Quercus rubra, Ulmus rubra, and in some areas Acer platanoides or Ailanthus altissima. Understory vegetation is highly variable depending on site history and often includes Toxicodendron radicans; Lindera benzoin is sometimes present. The invasive non-native Rosa multiflora may be present as a shrub, along with the non-native bramble Rubus phoenicolasius. Non-native species such as Alliaria petiolata, Chelidonium majus, Glechoma hederacea, and Convallaria majalis can characterize the herb layer, which may also have a native component. |

This floodplain forest alliance is found in the midwestern United States. The tree canopy may be closed to moderately open. The dominant tree species include Quercus macrocarpa and Quercus bicolor. Carya laciniosa is often found in stands of this alliance, along with species such as Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Quercus shumardii, Carya illinoinensis, Populus deltoides, and Ulmus americana. Understory species include Boehmeria cylindrica, Carex spp., Cinna spp., Leersia spp., Toxicodendron radicans, and Uvularia sessilifolia. Stands of this alliance are found on slackwater deposits with moderately well-drained to poorly drained soils. In Kentucky, the dominant tree species are indicators of less acidic soils with a higher base-status. |

This association comprises kelp beds of rocky coasts of New England dominated by red and brown algae and occurring in the sublittoral zone along rocky coastline habitat. Laminaria agardhii, Alaria spp., and Chondrus crispus are dominant and conspicuous. Other common associates can include Porphyra laciniata, Ceramium rubrum, and Hildenbrandtia prototypus. Additional species of red, green, and brown algae can occur in areas with greater light penetration. There is seasonal and geographic variability in species composition between areas north versus south of Cape Cod, which forms a major boundary between colder waters to the north fed by arctic currents and warmer waters to the south fed by the Gulf Stream. |
