This association represents herbaceous interdune wetland depressions on barrier islands, dominated by Spartina patens and Setaria parviflora, sometimes with scattered Baccharis angustifolia. The herb layer consists of species with maritime and calcareous affinities (some brackish influence from salt aerosol and hurricane overwash). Other characteristic species include Rhynchospora colorata, Cynanchum angustifolium, Panicum virgatum, Sabatia stellaris, Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera var. cerifera), Sabal palmetto, and Dichanthelium aciculare (= Panicum neuranthum). |

This association includes Quercus rubra forests at intermediate elevations (mostly below 1067 m [3500 feet], ranging from 610-1220 m [2000-4000 feet]) occurring in the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment, the Smoky Mountains and the Southern Blue Ridge. It may possibly range into adjacent areas of the Cumberland Plateau. These forests occur on mostly northern to eastern and southeastern, mid to upper, moderately steep slopes of intermediate exposure over acidic soils. The canopy is dominated by Quercus rubra, often with other oaks and Acer rubrum and/or Liriodendron tulipifera codominating. Other minor canopy species may include Betula lenta, Carya alba, Carya glabra, Halesia tetraptera, Quercus alba, Quercus prinus, and Magnolia fraseri. In some examples, hickories are sparse or absent. The subcanopy and sapling strata include the canopy species, as well as Halesia tetraptera, Betula lenta, Tsuga canadensis, Cornus florida, Acer pensylvanicum, and Oxydendrum arboreum. The shrub stratum is typically sparse but may have local dominance by Gaylussacia ursina or Rhododendron maximum. Herbaceous cover is sparse to moderate but can be species-rich. Ferns can be locally dominant, typically Thelypteris noveboracensis and Athyrium filix-femina ssp. asplenioides. This forest is distinguished from High Elevation Red Oak forests[see associations in ~Quercus rubra - Quercus alba Montane Forest Alliance (A3116)$$] by lack of species such as Betula alleghaniensis, Ilex montana, Vaccinium simulatum, and by lacking abundant Hamamelis virginiana, as well as its occurrence at generally lower elevations. It is also characterized by having a more mixed oak composition (versus nearly monospecific Quercus rubra). In the Southern Blue Ridge Escarpment region, these montane oak-hickory forests seem to occupy environments intermediate between more-protected forests dominated by Quercus alba and drier more-exposed Quercus prinus forests. |

This pitch pine lowland community is restricted to the New Jersey Pine Barrens. This association is described as hydric, with a saturated hydrology. The open canopy is dominated by Pinus rigida, with Acer rubrum, Nyssa sylvatica, and Amelanchier arborea being infrequent associates. The shrub layer may be quite dense and is characterized by Vaccinium corymbosum, Leucothoe racemosa, Gaylussacia frondosa, Gaylussacia baccata, Kalmia angustifolia, and Ilex glabra. The herbaceous layer is not well developed. Sphagnum species are common in the bryophyte layer. |

This non-tidal swamp forest is characterized by Taxodium distichum and known to occur along the upper reaches of blackwater rivers and associated tributaries of the Maryland and Delaware Coastal Plain. Stands are typically positioned along slow-moving rivers, braided streams and backswamps subject to temporary and seasonal overbank flooding. Soils are composed of sand and silt loam and are frequently flooded for long periods with standing water. The canopy is characterized by emerging Taxodium distichum associated with admixtures of species such as Nyssa biflora, Nyssa sylvatica, Acer rubrum, Liquidambar styraciflua, and Fraxinus pennsylvanica. The shrub layer is diverse and typically includes species such as Clethra alnifolia, Ilex verticillata, Ilex opaca, Magnolia virginiana, and Itea virginica. Herb diversity is variable and can be can patchy in stands with a considerable amount of standing water. Most constant species include Boehmeria cylindrica, Saururus cernuus, Woodwardia areolata, Carex crinita, Carex folliculata, Impatiens capensis, Peltandra virginica, Osmunda regalis, Osmunda cinnamomea, and Chelone glabra. |

This tropical calciphilic community is thought to occur on Amerindian shell middens and natural shell deposits, in the tidal marsh landscape of tropical Florida. This is a low-confidence type; more information is needed on the extent and composition of examples of this community. Tropical hardwoods would share canopy dominance with the temperate nominal species Magnolia virginiana and Sabal palmetto. The putative range of this association is south of the extent of Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola, which would be absent from stands of this type. Composition is probably highly variable from site to site, depending on environmental conditions and fortuitous accidents of establishment and persistence. |

This pondshore margin community of southern New England and New York generally occurs as a narrow band at the periphery of Coastal Plain pondshore basins, adjacent to the shrub zone or upland forest, if a shrub zone is absent. The substrate is sandy with a shallow organic layer or deeper muck. Characteristic species include Calamagrostis canadensis, Dichanthelium meridionale (= Panicum meridionale), Panicum virgatum (= var. cubense), Euthamia caroliniana (= Euthamia tenuifolia), Viola lanceolata, and Polygala cruciata. Sphagnum cuspidatum can be abundant. Shrubs from the adjacent border may be admixed at variable cover. Shrubs may include Spiraea alba, Clethra alnifolia, Vaccinium corymbosum, Chamaedaphne calyculata, Leucothoe racemosa, or Vaccinium macrocarpon. |
