This association includes rich forests dominated by Fagus grandifolia in mixtures with other mesophytic hardwood species, in the Ouachita and Ozark mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. This forest is found on sheltered slopes, ravines, and upper terraces, and can be associated with limestone geology. The closed forest canopy is dominated by Fagus grandifolia, usually with codominance by one or more of the following trees: Quercus rubra, Quercus alba, Tilia americana var. caroliniana, Fraxinus americana, and Magnolia acuminata. Other species that may be in the canopy, but not typically with high coverage, include Acer saccharum, Carya alba, Carya cordiformis, Carya glabra, Juglans nigra, Liquidambar styraciflua, Nyssa sylvatica, Quercus velutina, and Ulmus rubra. Magnolia tripetala is often conspicuous in the subcanopy and shrub strata. Other typical subcanopy species are Ostrya virginiana, Cornus florida, Carpinus caroliniana, Morus rubra, and Hamamelis virginiana. The shrub stratum is open to moderately dense. Typical shrubs and woody vines include Asimina triloba, Lindera benzoin, Dirca palustris, Euonymus americanus, Hydrangea arborescens, Toxicodendron radicans, and Parthenocissus quinquefolia. The herb stratum is lush and diverse, but can vary in composition from site to site, depending on soil fertility and past disturbance. Some typical species include Adiantum pedatum, Actaea pachypoda, Amphicarpaea bracteata, Brachyelytrum erectum, Hepatica nobilis var. acuta, Iris cristata, Podophyllum peltatum, Trillium sessile, Trillium viridescens, Prosartes lanuginosa, Panax quinquefolius, and Polystichum acrostichoides. |

This semi-natural herbaceous association is currently sampled from a single national historical park in Hawaii, and this description is based on occurrences there. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found near sea level on gentle slopes. The substrate is mostly bedrock or rocks. This community has a widely scattered or absent tree canopy over grasses. The herbaceous stratum is strongly dominated by Melinis repens. Leucaena leucocephala and Talinum triangulare are also found. The sparse tree canopy contains Morinda citrifolia, Passiflora foetida, and Cocos nucifera. There is also a sparse shrub canopy composed of Waltheria indica. |

This semi-natural herbaceous association is currently sampled from a single national historical park in Hawaii, and this description is based on occurrences there. Additional global information will be added as it becomes available. It is found from sea level to 46 m in elevation and on gentle slopes of any aspect. Sites are dry low slopes or low level areas and nearly all are over recent a'a or pahoehoe lava. This community has sparse or absent woody strata composed of Prosopis pallida. The herbaceous stratum is variable; Pennisetum ciliare is the most abundant herbaceous species. Other common taxa are Eragrostis tenella and Asteraceae spp. |

This dry-mesic, calcareous, woodland community occurs on slopes and ravines adjacent to blackland prairie on the Upper West Gulf Coastal Plain of Arkansas. Overstory trees are relatively short (to 10 m [35 feet]) and widely spaced. In fire-maintained examples the overstory is not closed; both the midstory and shrub layers tend to be sparse. The herbaceous layer is predominately forb in composition and moderately dense with little litter build-up. Fire plays a role in maintaining the woodland structure, and fire-suppressed woodlands can have a dense midstory and suppressed herbaceous layer. The dominant tree species is overwhelmingly Quercus sinuata, but other species with calcareous affinities may also be present. The herbaceous layer is dominated by forbs and sedges. Dominant herbaceous species include Symphyotrichum cordifolium (= Aster cordifolius), Carex cherokeensis, Desmodium perplexum (= Desmodium paniculatum var. dillenii), Geum canadense, Helianthus hirsutus, Leersia virginica, and Solidago auriculata. |
