Vitis rotundifolia / Triplasis purpurea - Panicum amarum - Schizachyrium littorale Mid-Atlantic Coastal Medaño Sparse Vegetation
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.35018.CEGL004397
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This association consists of large, shifting dunes (meda15-50 m high in the Mid-Atlantic Coastal Plain of North Carolina. Scattered vegetation is present, particularly woody vines, such as Vitis rotundifolia, Vitis cinerea var. floridana, Campsis radicans, and Parthenocissus quinquefolia. Scattered clumps of pioneer herbs, shrubs, and subshrubs, such as Schizachyrium littorale (= Schizachyrium scoparium ssp. littorale), Panicum amarum, Ammophila breviligulata, Triplasis purpurea, Uniola paniculata, Cenchrus tribuloides, Diodia teres, Chrysopsis gossypina, Prunus serotina, and Hudsonia tomentosa occur in sheltered locations, particularly low on the dune. This community apparently harbors several globally rare invertebrates. Dunes with any substantial vegetation are not classified here. The best remaining examples of this sparse vegetation are Jockey's Ridge and Run Hill (Dare County, North Carolina). Former examples (now stabilized and vegetated) are the Seven Sisters (Currituck County, North Carolina), Kitty Hawk (Dare County, North Carolina), and Bald Head (Brunswick County, North Carolina). These are the highest dunes on the coast of eastern North America.

Quercus virginiana - Quercus hemisphaerica / Ilex vomitoria / Aristida condensata - Panicum amarum var. amarum Forest
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.34840.CEGL004399
Southeastern Ecology Working Gro... 0 This community occurs on stabilized sand spits along estuarine rivers. It is potentially affected by limited soil development, excessive drainage, and periodic salt disturbance during major storms. The vegetation is a woodland or open forest dominated by Quercus virginiana and Quercus hemisphaerica which are relative short and stunted (5-12 m tall) but not obviously streamlined by salt-spray pruning. Other trees include Juniperus virginiana var. silicicola, Pinus taeda, and Carya glabra. An open understory includes Osmanthus americanus and Persea palustris. A patchy shrub layer is dominated by Ilex vomitoria. Woody vines are abundant, especially Smilax auriculata, Smilax bona-nox, and Vitis rotundifolia. The herb layer is patchy and has moderate cover. Species that dominate in patches include Carex arenaria, Spartina patens, Aristida condensata, Panicum amarum var. amarum, Cladonia spp., and Cladina evansii. The herb layer includes a combination of species shared with maritime grasslands, sandhills, and other open habitats.

Pinus flexilis / Festuca arizonica - Muhlenbergia montana Woodland
» more details
accession code: VB.CC.31694.CEGL005416
Western Ecology Working Group of... 0 This association is only known from the Sangre de Cristo Range in southern Colorado, but likely is more widespread in the southern Rocky Mountains. Stands occur on colluvial slopes and ridges between 2780 and 3150 m in elevation. Sites are located on warm aspects, southeast through northwest, and on slopes ranging from 6° on a high ridge to 38° on a steep colluvial slope. The ground cover is generally over 50% bare soil, gravel and rock, with about 30% litter and <10% each of basal area and wood (although one sample plot had 76% litter and few rocks). Soils are well-drained and high in sand. Past fires were noted at several plots taken at Great Sand Dunes National Park. Vegetation is characterized by an open tree canopy dominated by Pinus flexilis with an herbaceous understory dominated by graminoids Festuca arizonica and Muhlenbergia montana. The tree strata may have scattered individuals of Pinus ponderosa, Pinus aristata, Pinus edulis, Abies concolor, Pseudotsuga menziesii, or Juniperus scopulorum. Stands on ridgetops or otherwise on the edge of sharp gradients are more prone to mixing. Short shrubs are often present with up to 15% cover, but do not exceed herbaceous cover. Species can include Symphoricarpos spp., Juniperus communis, Ribes cereum, Cercocarpus montanus, and Rosa woodsii. The herbaceous layer is diverse, often supporting more than 30-40 forb and graminoid species. Festuca arizonica and Muhlenbergia montana typically codominate, but one or the other may be absent. Frequently encountered graminoids include Koeleria macrantha, Elymus elymoides, Blepharoneuron tricholepis, Carex siccata (= Carex foenea), Poa fendleriana, and Bromus ciliatus. Forbs found in at least half of the plots include Heterotheca villosa, Packera fendleri, Achillea millefolium var. occidentalis, Eriogonum alatum, Penstemon sp., Artemisia frigida, Potentilla hippiana, Astragalus sp., Castilleja linariifolia, Antennaria parvifolia, Erigeron spp., and Eriogonum jamesii. Other trace species include Artemisia ludoviciana, Arenaria fendleri, Clematis hirsutissima var. scottii, Frasera speciosa, Machaeranthera bigelovii, Oreochrysum parryi, Sedum lanceolatum, Comandra umbellata, Draba smithii, Penstemon linarioides ssp. coloradoensis, Thermopsis sp., and many others. Stands may border or contain inclusions of ~Festuca arizonica - Muhlenbergia montana Herbaceous Vegetation (CEGL001606)$$.
