This pine flatwoods community occurs in eastern Georgia. The open (to fairly closed) canopy is characterized by Pinus palustris, although Pinus elliottii var. elliottii can be present as well. Depending on fire regime, the ground layer can be shrub-dominated or herb-dominated, but composition does not change greatly. Typical shrubs include Ilex glabra, Gaylussacia tomentosa (= Gaylussacia frondosa var. tomentosa), Morella cerifera (= Myrica cerifera var. cerifera), Serenoa repens, Photinia pyrifolia (= Aronia arbutifolia), Gaylussacia dumosa (= var. dumosa), Kalmia hirsuta, and Vaccinium myrtilloides. The grass layer is typically dominated by mixtures of Sporobolus pinetorum, sometimes with admixtures of Sporobolus curtissii, Ctenium aromaticum, or Aristida beyrichiana. Other characteristic species include Andropogon glaucopsis (= Andropogon glomeratus var. glaucopsis), Andropogon glomeratus var. hirsutior, Aristida spiciformis, Oclemena reticulata (= Aster reticulatus), Balduina uniflora, Bigelowia nudata ssp. nudata, Carphephorus paniculatus, Carphephorus tomentosus, Centella erecta, Cleistes sp., Coreopsis linifolia, Eupatorium leucolepis, Euthamia caroliniana (= Euthamia minor), Hypericum gymnanthum, Lycopodiella alopecuroides, Pogonia ophioglossoides, Polygala lutea, Rhexia alifanus, Rhexia lutea, Rhynchospora baldwinii, Rhynchospora ciliaris, Sarracenia flava, Sarracenia minor, Syngonanthus flavidulus, Xyris baldwiniana, and Xyris caroliniana. |

This association occurs on low dunes of barrier islands along the Louisiana and Texas coasts. In Louisiana, it is known from the Chandeleurs and related islands, where Spartina patens replaces Uniola paniculata (which is present in small amounts) as the dominant grass along the upper beach and primary dune. Louisiana barrier islands are the only areas in the southeastern U.S. to show a dominance by Spartina patens on the upper beach and primary dune. On the barrier islands of coastal Texas, this vegetation is found on stabilized secondary dunes where Spartina patens and Paspalum monostachyum typically codominate. Other grasses that may be present include Panicum amarum, Sporobolus virginicus, Cenchrus spinifex (= Cenchrus incertus), Eustachys petraea, and Eragrostis secundiflora ssp. oxylepis (= Eragrostis oxylepis). Other characteristic species include Galactia canescens, Rhynchosia americana, Opuntia stricta, Chamaecrista fasciculata (= Cassia fasciculata), Lythrum californicum, Helianthus argophyllus, Croton punctatus, Fimbristylis castanea, Sabatia stellaris, Cakile spp., Chamaesyce bombensis (= Chamaesyce ingallsii), and Ipomoea imperati (= Ipomoea stolonifera). The sediments which form beach parent material change abruptly between Ship Island (Mississippi) on the east and the Chandeleur Islands (Louisiana) to the west. |

This association occurs in the broad elevational transition zone between spruce-fir and northern hardwoods in the Southern Blue Ridge (approx. 1400-1550 m [4600-5100 feet]). Sites are steep to very steep, slopes often associated with cliff faces, rock outcroppings, or bouldery situations, and subject to disturbance by wind, ice, and landslides. The canopy is comprised of Picea rubens codominating with deciduous species Betula alleghaniensis, Fagus grandifolia, and Aesculus flava, occurring singly or in combination. At higher elevations, Abies fraseri may be a minor canopy component. The shrub layer is well-developed and dominated by Rhododendron maximum or Rhododendron catawbiense. In the Great Smoky Mountains, Leucothoe fontanesiana can be the dominant shrub. Other minor shrubs include Ilex montana, Viburnum lantanoides, Vaccinium erythrocarpum, and Rubus allegheniensis. The thick, evergreen shrub layer precludes the establishment of seedlings or herbaceous plants and creates a heavy, slowly decomposing litter layer. Bryophyte cover can be high (over 50%), and the ground is covered with downed and decaying logs. |

This community is represented by a narrow vegetation zone that encircles limesink ponds in southern Alabama. This zone contains various woody species, with Hypericum reductum being most conspicuous, generally occurring along the uppermost or landward portion. Other woody associates include Hypericum fasciculatum and Hypericum myrtifolium, but less frequently. The herbaceous component is characterized by a mix of Sagittaria isoetiformis, Eleocharis tricostata, Eleocharis melanocarpa, Syngonanthus flavidulus, Lachnocaulon minus, Rhynchospora nitens, Rhynchospora microcarpa, Xyris longisepala, Ludwigia suffruticosa, Rhexia salicifolia, and Eupatorium leptophyllum. |
