Stands occur in seasonal and perennial wetlands in ditches, rivers, streams, channels, and ponds from sea level to 2300 m elevation. The vegetation of this alliance is dominated by ~Azolla filiculoides$ and/or ~Azolla mexicana$ floating on the water's surface. Other species present may include ~Spirodela$ spp., ~Lemna gibba, Lemna minor, Wolffiella$ spp., ~Wolffia borealis$, and other ~Wolffia$ spp. Emergent plants may be present. Total cover may be continuous, intermittent or open. |

This sumac - dogwood shrubland community is found in the central Great Plains and western tallgrass regions of the United States. Stands occur on level to moderate, well-drained slopes of uplands, usually along the borders of upland woods, but also in grassland ravines. Soils are silty loams formed in loess or glacial till. The vegetation consists of bands or patches of shrubs 2-3 m tall. Rhus glabra and Cornus drummondii are usually the dominant species, though in places Corylus americana, Prunus americana, Prunus angustifolia, Symphoricarpos orbiculatus, or Rhus aromatica may dominate. Where shrub cover is dense, vines such as Celastrus scandens and Parthenocissus vitacea may be present. Under the dense canopy, the herbaceous layer may be sparse, consisting of exotic species, such as Poa pratensis and Nepeta cataria. In open stands, the herbaceous layer is more dense and consists of species of tallgrass and mixedgrass prairie. |

This dry white pine - northern hardwood forest occurs widely throughout the upper midwestern and northeastern United States and eastern Canada. The typical environmental setting is well-drained, acidic, sandy or gravelly soil over glacial till, in general a less mesic setting than northern hardwoods lacking white pine. Stands are characterized by a closed canopy, sometimes with supercanopy pine, patchy (but overall fairly sparse) shrubs, and relatively sparse herb and bryoid strata. Canopy dominants are the northern hardwood species Acer saccharum, Betula alleghaniensis, and in the Northeast Fagus grandifolia, with Pinus strobus, the pine often occurring as a supercanopy. Minor canopy associates may include Tsuga canadensis and Quercus rubra. In the Northeast at the northern edge of the range, Abies balsamea, Picea rubens and Thuja occidentalis may also occur sparingly. The subcanopy is dominated by Acer pensylvanicum. The herbaceous layer is characterized by Trientalis borealis, Maianthemum canadense, Pteridium aquilinum, Oryzopsis asperifolia, intermixed with the dwarf-shrubs Gaultheria procumbens, Vaccinium angustifolium and Gaylussacia baccata. Bryophytes include Polytrichum commune, Pleurozium schreberi, Bazzania trilobata, or Hypnum imponens. Distribution in Michigan needs further checking. |

This shrubland is dominated by short shrubs (generally less than 2 m tall), but taller shrubs and trees are common. It has been identified in the northern panhandle of Texas but is likely more widespread in the southwestern Great Plains. This association is found near streams and lakes, often on the first terrace and on alluvial soils. The water table is high and seasonal flooding is common. Stands usually have a dense short-shrub canopy strongly dominated by Baccharis salicina, but other short and tall shrubs and trees are often present, including Salix spp., Tamarix spp., and Populus deltoides. The herbaceous stratum is typically sparse to moderate due to the heavy shading by shrubs. Common herbaceous species are Muhlenbergia asperifolia, Panicum virgatum, and Phragmites australis. |

Described only from the Central Coast Ranges of California, this shrubland occurs on moderate to steep north- and northeast-facing slopes with elevations between 348 and 627 m (1141-2057 feet). Stands occupy sandy soils on volcanic, fanglomerate, and igneous substrates. In this association, the overstory shrub layer is codominated by Prunus ilicifolia ssp. ilicifolia and Fraxinus dipetala. The climbing vine Clematis lasiantha is often present, overtopping the taller shrubs. The understory herbaceous layer may include the forbs Anthriscus caucalis, Galium porrigens var. porrigens, Marah fabaceus, and Pentagramma triangularis ssp. triangularis, and the graminoid Bromus rubens (= Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens). |

This association has been identified in the northern panhandle of Texas but is likely found in other areas in similar habitats. The association occurs as narrow bands along the tops of escarpments and narrow ridges where bedrock is at or very near the surface. Bedrock outcrops and rocks are abundant. Soil is shallow. It is dominated by dwarf-shrubs with variable cover of herbaceous plants. The dwarf-shrubs typically have moderate cover. Herbaceous cover can be sparse to moderate. The dominant shrubs are Dalea formosa and Mimosa borealis, with Gutierrezia sarothrae often present and sometimes abundant in wet years. A variety of herbaceous species may be present, but Aristida purpurea and Bouteloua curtipendula are among the most common. |
