This minor forest association occurs in the upper montane and subalpine zone in the southern, central and northern Rocky Mountains. Sites are cool, relatively moist slopes or riparian. Stands are typically found on moderate to very steep canyon and mountain slopes, as well as on nearly flat valley bottoms and on benches with moderate to gentle slopes. Aspects are typically northerly or shaded (in canyon). Lowland aspects are variable. Substrates may be gravelly or not, typically with loam- or sandy loam-textured soil, although finer textured soils are reported. Litter dominates the ground cover often 3-8 cm deep with low cover of rock and bare ground. The vegetation is characterized by a tree canopy codominated by Abies lasiocarpa and Picea engelmannii with the tall shrub Acer glabrum dominating the understory. The evergreen needle-leaved tree canopy is open to moderately dense (30-80% cover). The tree canopy is typically dominated by Abies lasiocarpa with lesser amounts of Picea engelmannii. Scattered Pinus contorta, Abies concolor, Pseudotsuga menziesii, Picea pungens, and Populus tremuloides trees may be present. The tall-shrub layer is open (patchy) to moderately dense. Acer glabrum dominates or codominates with other tall shrubs such as Amelanchier alnifolia or Sorbus scopulina. An open to moderately dense short-shrub layer is often present with species such as Lonicera utahensis, Mahonia repens, Paxistima myrsinites, Physocarpus malvaceus, Rosa spp., Rubus parviflorus, Ribes spp., Symphoricarpos spp., Vaccinium spp. and the vine Clematis columbiana. The herbaceous layer is composed of diverse forbs with graminoids present to codominant. Species with high constancy include Arnica cordifolia, Bromus spp., Calamagrostis rubescens, Carex geyeri, Carex rossii, Elymus glaucus, Erigeron eximius, Lathyrus lanszwertii, Osmorhiza berteroi (= Osmorhiza chilensis), Penstemon wilcoxii, Maianthemum stellatum, and Thalictrum spp. |

This low shrubland is a disturbance-induced community that occurs on ground damaged by clearing or fire. It tends to occur in small (<1 acre, often much less) patches. It likely occurs throughout California but has been documented only in central and southern California. A small "weedy" community, it is easily overlooked. Stands occur on somewhat steep slopes to flat areas on variable aspects, most often southerly. Elevations range from 25 to 1043 m (84-3422 feet). Stands are often located on variable topography, sometimes lower to middle slopes. Soils are variable, including sands, clays, and loams. The low-shrub layer is dominated by <i>Lotus scoparius var. scoparius</i>. <i>Artemisia californica, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Rhus ovata, Lupinus albifrons var. albifrons</i>, and <i>Corethrogyne filaginifolia (= Lessingia filaginifolia)</i> may be present at low cover. The herbaceous layer is diverse and often includes abundant non-native species, such as <i>Centaurea melitensis, Erodium</i> spp., and <i>Bromus rubens (= Bromus madritensis ssp. rubens)</i>, and native species, such as <i>Artemisia dracunculus</i> and <i>Croton californicus</i>. |

This riparian woodland is know from northern, central, and southern California, from the Sierra Nevada foothills, central interior Coast Ranges, and San Diego and Riverside counties. It occurs on low-gradient, relatively wide or narrow streams and rivers at elevations from 57 to 1275 m (187-4182 feet). Stream gradients range from 0-4°. Valley width is usually moderately wide to wide, with a few occurrences on narrow reaches. <i>Populus fremontii</i> and <i>Salix laevigata</i> are typically codominant, although some stands lack red willow. Tree cover typically exceeds 50% (4-90%), but some stands have much less cover. Conversely, understory layers are usually open. Shrub species that may be present include <i>Baccharis salicifolia, Baccharis pilularis, Salix lasiolepis, Rubus discolor (= Rubus procerus), Rubus ursinus</i>, and <i>Rosa californica</i>. The herbaceous cover is also highly variable. No understory species is designated in the name of this association to reflect the high variation and lack of consistency of the understory layers. |

This community has only been observed at Bryce Canyon National Park on the Paunsaugunt Plateau in southern Utah. The ground is mostly open bare soil, sand or bed rock. Stands occur on steep slopes at all aspects, between 2337 and 2588 m in elevation. It is a mixed-conifer association, with many species, where <i>Picea pungens</i> is the indicator. <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii, Pinus ponderosa, Abies concolor, Pinus flexilis</i>, and <i>Pinus longaeva</i> often all occur together with <i>Picea pungens</i>. <i>Juniperus scopulorum</i> may also be present. Total cover of the shrub layer is low, and <i>Arctostaphylos patula</i> is the most characteristic, commonly present, although rarely abundant. Other shrubs present may include <i>Acer glabrum, Purshia tridentata, Juniperus communis, Symphoricarpos oreophilus, Symphoricarpos rotundifolius</i>, and <i>Ceanothus martinii</i>. The herbaceous cover is very low to non-existent. |
