This desert annual grassland association occurs on mesas, alluvial fans, valley floors, washes and disturbed areas. Sites are flat to gently sloping. Substrate is variable but is reported from well-drained sandy soil. The open to dense herbaceous layer is strongly dominated by annual grasses with low cover (<10%) of perennial grasses. Bouteloua aristidoides, Eriochloa lemmonii, and/or Chloris virgata dominate the herbaceous layer. Cover of vegetation is variable depending on amount and season of annual precipitation, but it is moderately dense to dense most years. Scattered shrubs Prosopis velutina, Baccharis sarothroides, and Gutierrezia ssp. may be present in low cover. Other associates are mostly annuals and small patches of perennial vegetation such as Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua rothrockii, Boerhavia coccinea, Eragrostis intermedia, and Tetraclea coulteri. Common annual species include Amaranthus palmeri, Aristida adscensionis, Bouteloua barbata, Urochloa arizonica (= Brachiaria arizonica), Chamaecrista nictitans, Chamaesyce hyssopifolia, Kallstroemia grandiflora, Mollugo verticillata, Physalis crassifolia, Polygala barbeyana, Portulaca umbraticola, Sida abutifolia, and Tidestromia lanuginosa. Exotic grasses Eragrostis curvula, Eragrostis lehmanniana, and Eragrostis cilianensis are present in some stands. |

This desert grassland association occurs in southeastern Arizona on alluvial fans, ridges, hills and valley floors. The elevation range is 960-1100 m (3150-3600 feet). Sites occur on gentle to moderate slopes. Substrates are variable but are often well-drained sandy loam. This semi-natural grassland is characterized by dominance or codominance of Eragrostis lehmanniana, an introduced, perennial forage grass seeded and now naturalized throughout much of southern Arizona. Natural mixed desert grasslands are noted for their high species diversity and range in cover from relatively sparse to dense. This association is also variable in composition and cover and is defined by having 25% or more cover of Eragrostis lehmanniana or over a third of the total perennial graminoid cover for stands with a sparser herbaceous layer. Eragrostis lehmanniana also strongly dominates many stands with few native species remaining. Shrubs such as Prosopis velutina and Isocoma tenuisecta are present totaling between 10 and 25% cover. Remnant desert grasses include Aristida ternipes, Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua eriopoda, Bouteloua rothrockii, Digitaria californica, or Eragrostis intermedia. Gutierrezia microcephala is abundant in some stands. Other common species include Allionia incarnata, Ambrosia confertiflora, Boerhavia erecta, Mollugo verticillata, Opuntia versicolor, Panicum hirticaule, Polygala barbeyana, Proboscidea parviflora, and Talinum aurantiacum. |

This shrubland occurs in southern Arizona, typically on gentle to moderate slopes of ridges, foothills and mountain canyons. Sites may occur on any aspect but are typically found on warmer southern and western aspects. Plot data from Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge indicate an elevational range of 1090-1290 m (3580-4230 feet) on well-drained sandy loam. Substrates are often rocky with 10-50% surface rock. The vegetation is characterized by a moderately dense (30-60% cover), short-shrub canopy dominated by Calliandra eriophylla (20% cover or more) and a tall-shrub layer dominated by Fouquieria splendens with 10% or more cover. Prosopis velutina has low cover (<10%) and does not codominate the tall-shrub layer. Other shrubs include Acacia greggii, Dasylirion wheeleri, and Mimosa dysocarpa. The herbaceous layer is open to moderately dense (10-50% cover) and is dominated by mixed perennial graminoids. Characteristic species are Aristida ternipes, Bothriochloa barbinodis, Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua curtipendula, Bouteloua repens, and Setaria vulpiseta (= Setaria macrostachya). Other common species include Evolvulus arizonicus, Gutierrezia microcephala, Janusia gracilis, Krameria erecta, Mammillaria grahamii, Opuntia versicolor, Opuntia engelmannii, and Talinum aurantiacum. Eragrostis lehmanniana may be present but has less than 25% cover and less than a third of the total perennial graminoid cover. |

The herbaceous layer is open to moderately dense (10-30% cover) and dominated by mixed perennial graminoids. Characteristic species are Aristida ternipes, Bothriochloa barbinodis, Bouteloua chondrosioides, Bouteloua curtipendula, and Setaria vulpiseta (= Setaria macrostachya). Other common species include Abutilon incanum, Evolvulus spp., Janusia gracilis, Krameria erecta, Mammillaria grahamii, and Talinum aurantiacum. Eragrostis lehmanniana may be present but at less than 25% cover and less than a third of the total perennial graminoid cover. |
