Western Ecology Working Group of...  0 This is a lowland riparian woodland known from southeastern Arizona. Elevation is at or below 1100 m (3600 feet). Stands occur in along perennial, low-gradient streams and in floodplains that are frequently flooded. Soils are derived from alluvium and vary from sandy to clayey. The vegetation is characterized by the dominance of <i>Populus fremontii</i> in the tree canopy, sometimes as an emergent strata. <i>Celtis laevigata var. reticulata (= Celtis reticulata)</i> may codominate in the tree canopy or form a subcanopy or tall-shrub layer. <i>Prosopis velutina</i> is often present to codominate in the subcanopy or tall-shrub layer. Other important shrubs include <i>Ziziphus obtusifolia</i> and <i>Prunus</i> sp. that may extend into the tall-shrub layer (2-5 m tall). <i>Baccharis sarothroides, Forestiera shrevei</i>, and <i>Ulmus</i> sp. may form an open to moderately dense short-shrub layer. <i>Mahonia haematocarpa (= Berberis haematocarpa)</i> is typically present in one of the shrub layers. The herbaceous layer is sparse to moderately dense depending on the density of the shrub layer. Associated species include <i>Acalypha ostryifolia, Carex</i> sp., <i>Digitaria californica</i>, and <i>Leptochloa dubia</i>. <i>Sorghum halepense</i> is present in disturbed stands.

EcoArt 2002  0 This montane and subalpine woodland alliance occurs between 2100 and 2850 m elevation on a few widely scattered areas in the mountains of northern California. It can occur on all slopes, but is most extensive on upper slopes. This alliance requires moderately high annual precipitation, of which a significant portion must fall as snow. The summers are distinctly dry. Substrates in the northern portion of the range are volcanic, grading to granitic in the southern portion. ~Pinus washoensis$ is the sole or dominant tree in the canopy of this montane and subalpine California woodland. ~Pinus contorta var. murrayana, Pinus jeffreyi, Pinus ponderosa, Abies magnifica, Pinus monticola$, and ~Abies concolor$ may also be present. Shrubs are very sparse, but may include ~Pseudostellaria jamesiana$ and/or ~Lupinus caudatus$. The herbaceous layer is dominated by graminoids.
