This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found on convex or linear, middle third of slopes to ridgetops of 8-45° on all aspects. Soil textures range from coarse sandy loam to moderately fine clay loam of shale, siltstone, and sandstone. The stands may occur on the landward side of coastal dune systems such as at North Beach on Point Reyes Peninsula. Some stands have more windblown sand in the soil surface layer while others are found on fine-grained marine sediments. Moisture content is somewhat higher than surrounding upland annual grassland vegetation, but somewhat lower than adjacent <i>Deschampsia caespitosa</i> stands or stands of ~<i>Baccharis pilularis / Deschampsia caespitosa</i> Shrubland (CEGL003188)$$. Stands of this shrubland have a dense herbaceous cover. It is dominated by low subshrubs of <i>Baccharis pilularis</i> and <i>Danthonia californica</i> and usually includes <i>Pteridium aquilinum, Aira caryophyllea, Plantago lanceolata, Achillea millefolium, Holcus lanatus, Bromus maritimus, Carex</i> sp., <i>Cirsium quercetorum</i>, and <i>Rumex acetosella</i>. Often found in this association are <i>Iris douglasiana, Eriogonum latifolium, Vulpia</i> sp., <i>Elymus glaucus, Bromus hordeaceus, Grindelia stricta, Hypochaeris radicata, Pseudognaphalium californicum (= Gnaphalium californicum)</i>, and <i>Madia</i> sp. This association is frequently found adjacent to annual grasslands. |

This alliance is found in and near running water of small streams, seeps, wet meadows, and springs in the mountains of Colorado. Elevations range from 3200-3800 m. The substrate is saturated to the surface for extended periods during the growing season. Soils range from mineral, thin and skeletal to loess with high organic matter accumulation. Occasionally stands are located in small openings of forested creeks, with Abies lasiocarpa - Picea engelmannii forests on adjacent streambanks. Cardamine cordifolia dominates the forb layer with at least 60% cover. Other forbs that can codominate include Mertensia ciliata, Senecio triangularis, Caltha leptosepala, or Epilobium anagallidifolium. Other commonly present forbs include Saxifraga odontoloma, Mitella pentandra, Oxypolis fendleri, Delphinium barbeyi, and Epilobium hornemannii. The graminoid layer is not well represented. The nonvascular stratum can include Philonotis fontana var. pumila (= Philonotis tomentella) and Bryum sp. Salix planifolia and Salix brachycarpa shrublands occur above and below, along broader, less steep reaches. |

This association represents oligohaline tidal marshes of the Atlantic coast dominated by Eleocharis fallax, Eleocharis rostellata, Schoenoplectus americanus (= Scirpus americanus), Pontederia cordata, Sagittaria lancifolia, and others. Other characteristic species can include Centella erecta, Eriocaulon decangulare, Ludwigia alata, Cyperus haspan, Cladium mariscoides, Sabatia dodecandra, Eryngium aquaticum, Proserpinaca palustris, Ludwigia alata, and Juncus spp. Sites are peaty, oligohaline marshes, well away from tidal guts, and have been called 'spikerush lawns.' Salinity is 0.5-5 ppt. |

This shrubland association is currently only known from Point Reyes National Seashore in California, and the following description is based on occurrences there. Additional information will be added as it becomes available. Stands are found on linear dune tops of 5-degree slopes facing north-northwest. The soil textures are moderately coarse sandy loam from stabilized sand dunes. The north-facing sides of fog-shrouded dunes of North Beach provide a surprisingly mesic environment, allowing the mesophytic association to develop. Litter and humus content on the soil surface is relatively high for most dune vegetation. This association forms an intermittent to continuous subshrub/herb layer less than 0.5 m tall. It is dominated by <i>Baccharis pilularis</i> and <i>Deschampsia caespitosa</i> and may include <i>Aira caryophyllea, Danthonia californica, Holcus lanatus, Iris douglasiana, Vulpia</i> sp., <i>Hypochaeris radicata, Rubus ursinus, Rumex acetosella</i>, and <i>Bromus carinatus</i>. <i>Bromus hordeaceus, Erigeron glaucus, Gamochaeta purpurea (= Gnaphalium purpureum), Lupinus arboreus, Plantago lanceolata</i>, and <i>Stachys ajugoides</i> may contribute minor amounts of cover. This association may be adjacent to <i>Ammophila arenaria, Juncus</i> stands, <i>Baccharis - Lupinus</i> dunes, and cultivated pastures. |

Stands of this central California shrubland alliance are found within a few kilometers of the coast, at an elevation of about 300 m. Annual precipitation is approximately 50 cm, with a distinct summer dry season. Temperatures are mild, and all stands are within the zone of coastal fog incursion. Fog drip contributes significant moisture. These stands occur on partially podzolized marine terraces derived from sandstone and old beach deposits. The sterile soils are thin, highly acidic, poorly drained, and sandy in texture. A hardpan has developed through which water percolates very slowly. This shrubland alliance is dominated by needle-leaved evergreen trees of low stature. The highly acidic, infertile soils force these trees into a shrub-like habit. ~Cupressus goveniana$ is the sole or dominant plant in the canopy. ~Pinus muricata$ and ~Pinus radiata$ are common codominants or associates. Broad-leaved evergreen shrubs are common in the understory and may include ~Rhododendron macrophyllum, Gaultheria shallon, Vaccinium ovatum, Morella californica (= Myrica californica)$, and the regional endemics ~Ericameria fasciculata$ and ~Arctostaphylos hookeri$. ~Navarretia atractyloides$ and ~Navarretia squarrosa$ are common in the herbaceous layer. On deeper soils, this alliance intergrades with the ~~Pinus radiata$ Forest Alliance (A.125)$$. |

Stands of this shrubland association occupy a narrow coastal strip with relatively small total area, from south-central to north-central California. The characteristic species, <i>Eriophyllum stoechadifolium</i>, is largely restricted to bluffs and slopes within a short distance of the open ocean coast. Stands are commonly exposed to strong onshore winds and are often bathed in fog by salt-laden winds much of the year. Stands of this shrubland vary in structure forming an open to intermittent herb layer. Average total vegetation cover is 85%. This association is dominated by <i>Baccharis pilularis</i> and <i>Eriophyllum stoechadifolium</i> and includes <i>Clinopodium douglasii (= Satureja douglasii), Pteridium aquilinum, Diplacus aurantiacus (= Mimulus aurantiacus), Erigeron glaucus, Rubus ursinus, Toxicodendron diversilobum</i>, and <i>Holcus lanatus</i>. It may also include <i>Fragaria chiloensis, Frangula californica (= Rhamnus californica)</i>, and <i>Artemisia californica</i>. |

This plant association occurs on peatlands in southeastern Alaska from sea level to alpine. The topography includes broken mountain slopes, hill slopes, and, most frequently, lowlands. The soils are very poorly drained and consist of deep organic material. The overstory averages 50% cover and is dominated by <i>Pinus contorta var. contorta</i>. <i>Tsuga heterophylla, Tsuga mertensiana, Thuja plicata</i>, and <i>Chamaecyparis nootkatensis</i> are common codominants and also common in the understory. Tall-shrub cover averages 40% dominated by <i>Vaccinium ovalifolium</i> and <i>Menziesia ferruginea</i>. Low shrubs are also abundant, including <i>Vaccinium vitis-idaea</i> and <i>Ledum groenlandicum</i>. Herbaceous cover averages over 40% and includes <i>Cornus canadensis, Lysichiton americanus, Nephrophyllidium crista-galli (= Fauria crista-galli), Carex pauciflora, Carex aquatilis var. dives (= Carex sitchensis)</i>, and <i>Carex anthoxanthea</i>. |
